I can't hear vocals through the headphones during recording!!

I have a bit of a dumb question...I'm somewhat new to recording at home. I have a Behringer 802 mixer, a U-Control audio interface, a mxl 990 mic hooked up to my PC. I can record, and everything seems to be hooked up right. I hear the music when I'm recording and the signal from the mic is getting picked up well. I just can't hear the vocals as I'm recording. I hear them fine during playback though. I have no idea what could be wrong! I am using an old program called Magix music studio 7. I've tried Acid pro 6 and got the same results. I've searched the heck out of both manuals to no avail. PLEASE, SOMEONE HELP ME!! LOL.

Send the vocals to your headphone mix?

Trick question?

Unless you're trying to monitor the mix "as is" -- Then create a headphone mix.

make sure your monitor button is on, usually makes it louder anyway.

but turn it off after recording or you wont hear em.

im assuming you have all these options on your interface.

Well, I'm not sure how to create a headphone mix. I dont have seperate monitors, just some good pc speakers. I Do have the monitor button on the mixer turned on...no change. I haven't actually tried anything with the interface yet! lol! I'm at a loss. I just want to hear myself while I'm in the booth and it seems I'm just not supposed to! lol. Thanks anyway, guys!

In your software either Magix, or Acid Pro you need to turn Input Monitoring on. You'll have to check the help files for the particular software to find out how to do that because I'm not familiar with either of those programs. You'll also need to make sure you have your latency setting for your audio interface set as low as possible or the delay (latency) will make it difficult to use.

It's also possible that they don't support input monitoring in which case if your audio interface supports direct monitoring you can enable that in it's control panel, again you'll have to check the manual.

The 3rd and final option is to monitor signal at your mixer, for that there is usually a button(s) and/or a knob 'Mon' that you use.
