Mixing Single Tracked Snare Drum

I recently recorded some drum tracks with my friend Brad and on the snare tracks, it makes a noise when it rings out. His old band recorded in a studio with the same problem and the guy fixed it during the mix, and you can't even tell that there was a noise there. What would be the best way to make the snare sound the best and get rid of that noise?

It sounds like a simple gate would take care of it by simply cutting the signal off before the noise started. Otherwise if it can be pinpointed with a parametric EQ then you can as well isolate and pull that single frequency down a bit on that track.

Do you have a sample of the offending snare sound? That might help get closer to a possible solution as well.

Right on... we have one snare that does the same type of loud-*** over-ring.

To keep you from fixing it in the mix in the future, try puting a VERY thin peice of material over the whole drum. We used a 36"x36" peice of nylon/silk-like stuff, tied over, and around the drum, and the ring disappeared . It kept the snares timbre intact, just elliminated the stupid ring .

Good call Hue. Damping might do better as ti would indeed fix it before it hits the track.

Thanks guys, I used the floorfish plug in and it killed the ring. Next time we begin tracking I'll try covering the snare and see what we can get. This site is amazing, it has helped me a lot in the short period of time I've been using it.
