Ok heres what I want to know. I have a Fireface 800 that has optical ins/outs. If I buy a ADAT converter that has digital/optical outs can I use these with a light pipe to technically add another 8 channels to my recording setup if the converter is an 8 channel?

Not sure if they're (ADAT) still limited to 48kHz max - although there's nothing wrong with that (as around 80% of full-time professionals still record at the target rate anyway).

adat is just a way to send 8 channels of digital audio with one wire, as long as both ends are adat compatible, you're golden.
what i think you mean is another preamp type device that has adat output, so if it's got 8 pre's and an adat output, you can run that into your fireface's adat input, and you'll have 16 mic pre's.
it's like basically buying a new interface altogether.
