New to mixing... music sample included

Hey guys.

I have been getting some great replies from a couple of cool dudes on here about my upcoming project. I am recording my metal band, and I wanted some general direction on where to start on things. They helped a lot, and as I get closer to the mixing stage, I need all the help and input I can get.

I am some what new to this recording stuff. Tracking is pretty good for, but I know nothing much about mixing/mastering. I know what sounds good, just don't know many steps on how to get there... cmpression and EQ especialy is where I get lost.

If you would like to see a list of my gear and my setup, read the first post of this thread on the forums:

Since we started tracking a bit for our first recording, I now have a smaple I would like some general feedback on. This sample has no vocals in it yet, just guitars, bass, and drums.

I did nothing major to the mix. This is just a rough to see how everything would sound coming together. Again, no eq, compressors, ect... just a flat mix.

I have to put spaces between the sections of the web address in order for this to work right, as the 'play button' that pops up for mp3s doesn't seem to work correctly. I'll post the play button version to just in case, but it has not worked for me the last few times I triued posting. Just take the spaces out of the address that are between the dots so its one long link:

Please post some feedback for me. Thanks!

Hey RockWood, is this mix tweaked yet or the same as the first one I listened to in the other thread?

I'll try and get some time to this during the week. The next couple of nights are going to be busy for my little ears. But I'll make some time in the next couple of days.

No Noise, this is the same one. I was just posting it here to maybe get some more opinions. I don't think many people know this is in the other post because of its long lenght. Haha

But thanks for taking the time toread it. I was just looking for more feedback.

Just gave it a listen, and I'll go check the other thread as well.

Well, I'm no pro, and my listening space isn't exactly optimal right now, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

The recording itself sounds good to me, and sounds like it has a good bit of room to breathe, which is a good thing.

Now, I realize it's just a straight bare bones recording. That said, It sounds to me like the drums could use a bit more power on the kick, and the cymbals could be trimmed back just a hair. It also sounds to me like you're overpowering your lead quite a bit, so I'd suggest bringing it out a bit more.
I'd also suggest tightening up the bass a little as well, maybe give it a little more definition.

It sounds pretty good overall, and I wouldn't worry about EQing too much, other than to sort out any conflicting instruments. The spacing sounds good to me, and it's pretty well balanced overall I think.

Sure it needs a little TLC, but the recording sounds solid, so you just need to get it sounding its best.

Hope that helps, and that I wasn't too vague.

-edit- I'll keep tabs over on the "master" thread in the recording section from now too. copy/pasted these thoughts over there.

J-Bot,

Thanks again for the feedback. A second and even third, forth opinion is always great.

I too though about pulling the overheads down a bit, but didn't want to spend to much tim mixing that sample because its not even the actual track. We just put it togther to see what the overall sound was going to be like.

And I also heard from a couple other opions the same about the kick, and the bass track. Overall, I am pin pointing where the majority of the tweaks need, and I'll be sure to get on them soon.

I'm the vocalist of the group, and thats where I am worried the most. I always have a hard time pushing my vocals in the studio. Mainly because I like the music loud in the headphones so it makes me wanna get all the balls into my tracks. I am not sure if I can get the best out of my gear right now that will give me that loud almost 'live' feeling I need to get my vocals out right.

I' also wondering what compression levels I should be using as well as EQ on my vocals. I want this to sound as proffesional as possible, and vocals are what I also have issues with when mixing. I also though a couple of harder tom hits in the drums could of been compressed a bit..., but all thats for a later posting when we start actualy tracking this week.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. If you would like to follow me along on this project for further help (witch would be great), subscribe to this and/or the other thread. As I get closer to the mixing stage I'll be posting here more, but I am still getting ready to track vocals, so the recording forum part will be flooded soon as well...

Again, thanks!
