How to apply Multi-effects on Tascam DP01 8-track?

I''ve been recording with the Tascam DP01 8-track recorder for a while and am comfortable with assigning inputs, recording, mastering, etc. However, reading the manual, I can't seem to get the multi-effects to work. I can hear the effect being applied through the headphones, but when I go to record, it isn't there. If anyone has had a similar problem and found a solution, or has more detailed instructions on this feature, I would love to hear from you. Thanks.

I know someone else here had that same problem. And if I remember correctly he resolved it but never posted how he did it.

Something about having to apply the effect during mix down or something. But that would seem very odd to do it that way.
