I have the opportunity to buy a cheep AKG D112 mic, which I would use for micing vocals and accoustic guitar on a home setup. Alternatively i can borrow one of my band's Shure SM58s for the same purpose.

Would there be any mnoticeable benefit from using trhe AKG. I understand its ideal for kick drums and bass etc, but i wouldn't want it for that?

Errr, nah.

The D112, as you said, is made for mic'ing up kick drums - as a result, if you were to use it on vocals it would be very unflattering and would probably make them sound muffled and dead - you'd need to do a lot of EQ treatment to rectify them afterwards - same goes for acoustic guitars, etc.

You would be far better off with a Condensor mic - something like the Behringer B1, or the Samson C01 - these are both very cheap and will do a far better job.

I agree with jues. You definitely don't want to use the D112 for vocals or acoustic guitar. If the D112 and the SM58 are your only options at this point, I would use the SM58. However, like jues said, there are several decent condensor mics on the market for cheap that you would be much happier with if you have it in the budget.
