Opinions needed on drumtrack

Hi there,

Last Monday we recorded some drums in our rehearsal space for a new demo. We borrowed this really cool 60's kit from a friend, which sounds pretty nice.

Anyway, since we're pretty new to recording I wanted to have some of your opinions on this drumtrack: www.stone21music.com/11.mp3 (www.stone21music.com/11.mp3)

The microphones are from a Shure PGDMK6 set:

2 overheads: PG81
2 kickmics: SM57(beater) and PG52(almost outside drum)
1 snare: SM57

We tried to follow the Glyn John method, with an extra mic on the kick. The mics run through a Yamaha MG16/6 mixer to the Delta 1010lt, using Adobe Audition.

This is pure raw, only panned the overheads 100 left/right and tweaked the volumes a bit.

We will be recording again next monday and I was hoping to recieve some feedback from you guys on how it sounds and stuff :) I myself ain't too happy with how the kick sounds, I know it can sound way better than this.
I'm also thinking about micing the hi-hat..... Also, when the cymbals are hit it sounds like someone is blowing air into the overheads in the background (or whatever =/) ....

So love to hear from you, byebye.

If that is a raw tone, I think the kick sounds like a very nice capture. Good thump to it, once balanced with the beater mic and eq'd for a little click with that boom it should sound great. I have worked with far worse sounding kicks.

On the cymbals, they are clean at least. The have sizzle (air) but seem to be lacking a little body (eq to fix), could just be the speakers I'm on though.

What type of music are you recording?

Yep, I'm with Tripps. Nice capture for sure. You just need to mess around a little with the position of maybe the snare mic or mic's to capture a little more of the middle and high sound tone of it. The toms sound good as does the kick. But on the kick I must agree that adding a bit more of the beater smack will liven that up a good deal as well.

As for the cymbals that is pretty much how a ride will sound, lots of air to it and a crash on its own will as well have a bit of air to it.

I would work on some EQ to bring the kit more to life in the mid and upper mid tones and you will be good to go.

Thanks a lot for listening! I agree on the kick, it needs some more click/smack before it. The snare could also use some more highs.

About the overheads, we will try to move the mics around, although I'm not quite sure where to look (but I guess that's the essence of the mic-placement stage =P )

We're recording a badass hard ************* funktrack... or just funk :)

A slap'n popping basstrack will be recorded, using the PG81 (kickmic) before the speaker and a DI.
A guitartrack using probably just one sm57 and a vocal track also using an sm57 or some condenser mic but we'll see about that when we get to it!

Anyway we'll be trying to keep things as mono and dry as possible.

Thanks for your feedback, can't wait to start recording monday again! =D
