Outboard Effect Units

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Digitech Vocalist Live Pro. My idea was to be able to run vocals out to it from my computer and have the effected signal come back in...basically as an outboard effects unit.

I am running Sonar 7 with a Presonus Firepod interface.

Any ideas?

Welcome to HRC

I haven't opened Sonar in a while, but I would suspect you'd need to have a sound card with at least four outputs, so you can have stereo outs of the main mix, and output(s) for the vocal tracks you want to send to the device, and then back in to the inputs and record them on a different track.

That being said, have you tried any software plugins? It would make the whole situation much easier to deal with.

I do have several plugins. I just wanted to see if I could route this in there. The back of the firepod has 8 line outputs, 2 line inputs & 2 preamp outputs.

Does this help with any of this?

I want to get it running because it has some great effects.

You should (in theory) be able to send the tracks out of some of the extra line outs in the firepod, into your device, then out of the device and back in to the line ins of the firepod.

Doing so you may get a little bit of latency and need to drag the resulting waves back into sync, but you should be able to do it.

Ok, sounds like a plan. Now how do I pull those effected signals up in Sonar?

You simply send the vocal track out from Sonar through a pair of the outputs and then send the outputs of the Digitach unit back into the inputs of the Firepod and onto a new track in Sonar.

Sonar actually has a set up that will utilize that out board effect almost like it was a plugin. It will compensate for any latency that your Firepod has automatically.

Simply right click in the FX pane and you will have it come up. Assign a set of outputs to send the signal through and the assign a set of inputs and your all good.

I don't know sonar, but what I did was (using cubase and a delta 44) set up ins and outs 1 and 2 as the recording and playback in and outs, and the 3 and four ins and outs went out of the card, into a rack, through the units, and then back into the delta with the software being set up as an external effects bus in cubase, giving my some software control over things like volume and what not. Good way to do real time editing heh, cause when you're recording and you turn the physical knob, there ain't no undoing it.
