Two practical HRC questions

1. When I opt for having my e-mail publicly displayed on my Profile page, does that mean it's a prey sitting there waiting for bots to catch it, or is it dynamically generated when the page is activated? Reason asking is obvious, I don't want more spam.

2. What code do I use to have a YouTube video displayed in a post. I read the UBB code explanation, still I seem to be too stupid to get it to work. From what I understand a simple http:// link (like with pictures) should do the trick. What am I missing?

1- yes it is

2-, I look at any found URL to see if it's from youtube and has a video id, if so, I autogenerate the object tag for the video.

Guess I was just linking to pages that are no longer available. This one is and - of course - works. Wasn't doing anything wrong in the first place. Silly me.

Your answer concerning my first question can be interpreted either way. I assume that you mean that it is dynamically generated?

Sorry to bother you again. :-)

if you list your email as publically viewable, yes, it is embedded in the code for any ol' bot to catch if it scans the web site. I have, as one action item, a plan to change that at some point, but, admittedly, it's low on the list since it's easily fixable by not listing your email address as public.

Thanks dB. That's a clear answer. I can live with not showing my e-mail address publicly. I also understand that it has low priority, you're a busy person and have other things to do.

Hey Nightcap, I've had mine displayed since day one here. Granted I have some pretty good filters running and try to keep an updated list so I can get regular non spam emails. But I do still get a couple. Not sure it comes from this email being displayed. But it is honestly maybe a few per week if that.

I get more junk in my gmail spam box in one day then I get in my regular email in a month.

But I have been toying with shutting it off appearing in threads just for general sake. Since I can always be gotten through the email link in our admin contact box anyway.

But so far there hasn't been any major flood of crap caused by bots here I am pretty certain.

Hey Noize, good to see you back! Hope you had a great time seeing your son again.

I'm kinda weary to show my e-mail since I had a major (and I mean MAJOR) spam problem after I joined a forum in 2004. At the max I received between 400-500 junk mails a day. Even my spam filter couldn't keep up with it. It happened to be a mail addy that was not very important so I let it slide into oblivion. The addy I used for HRC is one that I use very regularly and that makes me want to be cautious.

The other day I noticed that I can change e-mail addresses on my profile page and maybe that's the way to go. Maybe it's time to give Nightcap his own mail addy. I'll give it a thought.

I've had my email public on this site for over two years, and I get very little spam at that address. I don't think you have to worry about it being listed on HRC. I suppose a better situation would be if they could be listed with the word "at" instead of the @ symbol, since the bots usually troll for that. That would mess up the clickability factor though.

Created one only for HRC to be sure, Herb. That should do the trick. If it gets targeted I can easily create another one. Still it's good to know that Noize and you don't get much spam.

Yep, good to be back. It was a long drive for sure but worth it to see Tuna.

I'll get some pix up tomorrow I hope. Ran out of time today with some issues that I wasn't expecting.
