Acoustic+Vox Miking Techniques?

I've been recording guitar and vocals at the same time lately, and I can't seem to control the bleed. The vox doesn't get into the guitar track as much as the guitar gets into the vox track- but this is a real problem, as all the vocal effects end up on the guitar as well. Any suggestions?

What kind of mics are you using, or which ones do you have available, could you be a little bit more specific on your mic set-up?

heh heh, record them separately.

=).

I've done a few all together like this, and they usually don't turn out so good. Add to that, the musico didn't want a click, and it was impossible to work with later. What you played is what you get.

If you can do them separate, it'll make life much easier later.

Bleed is common depending on the mic that you are using for the vocal track as Dual stated. It can be overcome by a couple different methods. One is mic position itself. The other would be gating the vocal mic. That is kind of tough though as once the gate is open you may still have bleed depending again on mic position.

I am guessing you are using a mic that has a very large pick up pattern and is getting a lot of that guitar into the vocal track.

This is one of about a billion reasons why the SM7b is the greatest vocal mic on the planet.

But even then -- Short of tracking them individually, you're going to be chasing your tail.

Even when tracking acoustic guitars on their own - Getting room noise, the player's breathing, etc., etc. out of the guitar tracks is enough of a chore.

I'm sure you have a good reason to track them both at the same time, probably feel and such? As to not sacrifice that part of your music i would say something along the lines of Noize as in you need to spend more time on mic positions, not so much to reduce bleed but to reduce ur need to mix the two together after the fact. Much like the olden days of recording u can position mics in a such a way that ur level between vocals and guitar is set, then ur basically just adding effects and EQ the way u would during a master.

Ya, but as Massive stated it is a tough thing to do. Especially if he wants effects on one thing and not the other. Then the only solution is tracking separately.
