EMU Releases Proteus VX as a freebie:

From KVR:

"As E-MU prepares the for the release and launch of its next-generation Emulator X3 Streaming Sampling Synthesizer software, they have released, for free, the full version of the Proteus VX Software Sound Module software which includes the enhanced v2.0.1 Proteus X Composer Bank (a special E-MU tweaked version of the Composer bank) that can be used in all versions of the Proteus X or Emulator X software.

Proteus VX is not copy-protected or card-locked like other versions of E-MU's instrument and sampling software, and can be used either as a VSTi or in stand alone mode on Windows (Proteus VX will install and function for most users on Windows Vista but is only officially tested and supported for Windows XP).

Proteus VX was previously only available as part of the "E-MU Production Tools Software Bundle" which is included with various E-MU hardware products."

The only downside, is that you have to subscribe to EMU's e-mail-newsletter to download the thing, but you can always unsubscribe later right?

I've gone through a bit of the bank, and it's pretty similar to the composer bank I have on plain ol' Proteus X I got with the Xboard, but they have tweaked a few of the settings a bit. Also, not needing any kind of "Dongle" is a nice thing. As with other Proteus software, it can run stand-alone, or as a VST.

There's quite a few usable sounds in the collection for sure, and it can open my other Proteus X banks as well. Seems a little less processor intensive on my end too, but maybe I'm just imagining things. :P

Not a bad deal at all.

Any link on it yet? I'm a sucker for free stuff. And as well I have a few pieces of E-mu hardware synths left in the rack I still use. Including a Proteus/3 World and the Proteus FX which was the predecessor of many of their dance and 2000 series sound modules of the modern day. I also cut my teeth on a real Emulator and used their hardware samplers for years.

Hehe, yeah, course, I've been saying I need a new prescription for my glasses. Road signs at night are getting a little fuzzy.

That said, I went to the main home page, and yeah, went through the products links looking for it figuring they might have had the freebie listed. Spent about 15 minutes rummaging through the website before I realized it was staring me right in the face on the front page. D'oh!

Ya, I grabbed it and installed it last night. The install placed crap all over the place. Not sure if you have looked yet, but it scattered crap everywhere. It did find my Steinberg/VST folder but that .dll didn't do crap. I eventually found another in a random Creative folder and let Sonar scan that one and it started working. But the content is scattered about in 3 different folders and I had to search it out and open it by some unknown button or file search thing. Even rebuilding the library didn't fix the patch menu. I'm not sure but I'll probably un install it and try one more time. If that doesn't clear it up I'll just get rid of it as I have more then enough software synths and samplers I don't need that one.

But the few sounds I tried last night are pretty much OK. Nothing jumps out though at all.

Ouch, that's a bummer. I extracted the zip into its own file, and ran the setup from there. When it gives you the option for the path, I specified my own within the same directory, just with a different folder. And for the VST, I have a special directory for those, so that's where I pointed it. It pretty much put everything where it was supposed to be in those regards. However, it -does- create a separate directory for the banks in the program group. programs/Creative Pro/EMU Sound Central/Composer Bank folder

And yeah not a whole lot jumped out of the bank at me either, although I did like some of the mono glide synth leads. Some of the basses were okay too. It's just kinda a generic bank really I think, but not a bad starter bank/freebie heh.

Ya, I normally don't let them default to the Steinberg folder. I have a separate folder for all non Cakewalk VSTi's as well a separate folder for pluggins only. I was just hurrying and let it run its defaults.

But indeed, it is a great starter for sure. I want to see if you can create or save anything though. Not sure if that is possible or not since it is free.
