I just wanted to post our newest recording up and get everyone's critique on my drums. Please tell me what you think.

(keep in mind, this recording is very quiet...hasn't hit the limiter yet)

Sounds really good Valid. I like the song, well done. My comments are purely subjective.

To me the hi hat needs to be tamed a bit. IMO it is a little loud in the intro and I find it a bit distracting. The snare could use a bit more crack to it. If you used a mic on the bottom of the snare, try boosting it a bit otherwise a bit of EQ may help. Either way this sounds great as is.

Well done. The tune reminds me of a Nightwish song... "Bless the Child" I think it is called. Anyways, it was enjoyable to listen to.

Thanks man. I guess some Mult Band Compression on the overheads should fix those hats.

I should perhaps back off on the attack time for the compressor on the snare then, to give it a little more room to snap through.

I'm also thinking of replacing the kick drum with a sample. What I've got now sounds more like a whump than a kick lol.

Try some EQ on the kick... somewhere around 2.5K to give is some attack. That might be all it needs. Replacing would work as well but almost seems like cheating when you have gotten the drums to sound this good already.

Yeah man, the kick can be a beast. It really does not sound bad for the song though. Try cutting the ole 300-500 range by alot. I use a Q of around 5-7 and cut at 350hz on my kick, I usually cut around -10 on up to -18 depending on the style. As stated the 2.5 boost can help bring out some attack.

Song is badass, reminds me of Metallica doing the orchestra album, except this is actually cool :) Very very cool sound, will it have vox?

the sad thing is, it's already but ripped down the middle and boosted the bejesus out of about 2.5 already...

I guess it's just a bad recording of that drum.

Yeah vox are coming prolly tonight. Also bass.

Thanks for the compliments!

indeed. I;ve gotten a good sound out of that drum before. It prolly fell into the pillow or something before we started tracking. Would explain the muffled sound I'm fighting. I'm not gonna be able to get any more definition out of the click part of the kick...

*sad* now I have to manually replace that kick bc I don't have drumagog...just session drummer...

Try tossing a bass boost on it before you EQ it. Also, try boosting 4k and 8-9k for that little click to cut through the mix and stand out on small speakers.

If that does not work, if you send me an MP3 (upload to your profile and make downloadable) of that kick track I will drumagog it to your liking to save you some time on replacement. We would have to have an FTP for me to send it back so you can maintain the WAV quality though.

Oh wow you would do that? What a beast! Thank you! I'll try to fix it with EQ first and then if it's a no go, then I'll send it your way. I'll host it on our band site and send you the url.

I'll give you an ftp account to send it back. (if wav is possible please do, if not, no biggie)

btw DB: is it ok to post my band's website on the forum?

sure, man, link it up...

If you have HarBal, maybe get a good kick drum from a sample and check the EQ of it, then try and match yours within HarBal...might help.

www.validband.com/main

Just finished the web design like 3 days ago...

24 hrs of straight computer screen...no sleep...just food and peeing lol...and bloodshot eyes.

Also there is another version of the song on the website. That studio didn't make us happy. (they burried the strings) so we are re-doing...

No problem at all, I can apply several different kicks, dump it back to youvia mp3 so you can hear them and pick one. Then I can do the whole shebang and mix it down to wav for you.

BTW, that is a kickass band photo on the site, almost like a group pic from jail if you had the height measuring board behind you :)

I am just dumping back an mp3, I went with one that has alot of attack. You may be able to match it with your current kick for sweetness or just process it to your liking. I cannot really hear anything over my laptop speakers so I just picked one from memory. If all is well I can upload a wav of it later if even needed.

Same file name with a _gog at the end. Should be there now.

I have tons of GOG samples, let me know if that one works for ya. It is possible you could roll of the lows and just combine the attack with your current kick tone. I did not compress anything so the dynamics should be the same.

I'm with Bluesdues on this one. I just plain like this. I can't wait to hear it sound like the track that auto plays on the site, that kicks some arse as well.

I must also agree it does have a certain NightWish sound to it. But just that it reminds me of it, same tune as mentioned above.

Very well done, I can't wait to hear it as it progresses.

Reminds me a bit of Metalica for some reason!

Really well done.

Not sure if I'm hearing a remixed version but everything sounds spot on to me, Laptop speakers not withstanding.

Very classy stuff mate.
