Recording to ableton7 with behringer (uca202) and microkorg

Hello all,

I want to find out how to connect my keyboard to my computer and record/edit/manipulate sounds therein with ableton live 7. The keyboard is a microkorg and the audio interface is a behringer U-Control (UCA202). I have the keyboard connected from its output ports to the UCA's inputs to the computer via usb. The computer appears to recognise the device but it doesnt show up in Ableton's inputs menu. I'm using vista (??!!).

I'm totally new to all this so I'm not sure how to go about setting all of this up. I would really really appreciate any help, pointers or advice and i apologise if this topic is in the wrong forum etc.

thanks.

You will need to go into the actual driver set up choices in Ableton. I can't tell you exactly were it is, but you will select the driver for the UCA there. I believe it will show up as simply USB AUDIO CODEC. Once you have selected that then you can select it as the input or output device in Ableton.

I think there is also a driver or firmware update that addresses any Vista issues for it as well on the Behringer site.

I know there were several issues with the UCA device in Vista, but I thought they had fixed them.

thanks for the reply noize. Unfortunately i'm still having difficulty getting ableton to recognise my korg. I can select it as a midi device in ableton but it still doesnt give me the UCA as choice in the inputs menu. Incidentally what does UCA stand for? and while I'm at it, what does ASIO mean? Is there any links you could recommend for someone just starting out? thanks.

UCA apparently stands for junk from what I have been reading about it and VISTA compatibility. I'll get back to that.

ASIO stands for Audio Stream Input/Output.

It is a Steinberg technology.

As for links simply head up to the top of the site here and hover over some of the drop down menus. You will find links to many articles here as well as the search engine which can find you links to just about everything to do with the studio and audio here.

Now back to the UCA202. It would appear that it hs had many issues with Vista, but the fault is not all on the UCA unit. Ableton has many faults with Vista as well and it would seem many have not been solved yet.

By biggest suggestion is to go to both Ableton and Behringer and download the latest updates for everything to do with the software and the UCA. It is the only way in which you are going to get any resolution with either product. By updating to the latest patches for them.

I have tried using ASIO4all but the same thing happens. I can select ASIO4all in the midi devices tab in ableton but no option appears in the inputs/outputs menu.

The only input available is Microsoft’s GS wavetable synth. Do i need to turn this off or something?

To the best of my knowledge I have the latest divers from Behringer.

OK, now I'm getting a bit confused here.

Are you trying to use the UCA as a midi interface? It is an audio interface and does not recognize any midi data. So if your thinking that midi data is going out from the audio outputs of the Korg that is not happening at all. You need a midi interface to so that, and that is a completely different animal altogether.

As for the Microsoft GX wavetable synth, that is not an input at all, that is an audio output general midi sound synth that is built into windows.

One thing is you will not see the Korg itself in any menu if that is what you are looking for.

AS I stated above, the UCA will show up if the drivers are installed properly as a USB Audio Codec device.

On the drivers, you may actually want to double check, don't just assume you have the latest drivers and firmware. I know they have been releasing fixes for this thing constantly trying to get it to work in Vista.

ok now im confused (!)

i thought the UCA202 would let me use the external keyboard as a midi device in ableton. This is also what i was led to believe when i purchased it (they didnt have any usb-midi cables and this was offered as an alternative). What good is an audio interface to me?!

I wanted to use the sounds in ableton; play them with the keyboard, and manipulate them with the analog knobs on the korg and then record them back into ableton.

I'm starting to think I'll just have to go all out soft-synth...

thanks for your time.

You will need a midi interface then, not an audio interface. The audio interface will allow you to record the sounds from the Korg but not the midi data.

There are a good deal of single channel midi interfaces for around the $20 to $40 mark. I would look into the M-Audio Uno for starters.
