Do I compress the signal after or before the pre-amplification?

I believe you should compress after the pre-amp stage.

Yeah - a compressor will require as much dynamic range as possible so that it can do a good job.

a Pre-Amp will ALWAYS come first in a signal chain - hence "Pre" :)
