Yamaha MD-4 Help

Hey everyone. I'm pretty new to the recording industry and am just getting started. I recently bought a yamaha MD-4 and am having some problems with it. There seems to be a huge amount of system noise. It is used and I havn't been able to fuly test it yet. However I was wondering if anyone had anythoughts on what could be wrong.

There is alot of background noise with nothing connected.
And even more when I hook a mic up.
Also, just moving the mic around seems to make it worse.
Could the mic cord be picking up interference from the MD4 itself?
Could the Mic or head phone jack be damaged?

any help would be great

yeah, moving the mic around sounds like in might be interference from the room. try turning off other electronics like florecent lighting, etc. Try it in other rooms or in an entirely differnt building if that's an option. Just to narrow the sources of the noise.

also, how are you monitoring the device? headphones or thru a power amp?

Thanks for the help....
I will have to try different locations.

I am monitoring the recorder through a powered amp.
But the headphones had the same problem

I would say if you are getting noise with nothing hooked up. That might be a sign of trouble. Do as Jamie suggested and try moving things around a bit. One question is, do you have the MD-4 sitting on or close to the PC or any other equipment like the amp or anything? this could cause some severe noise.

Thanks for the input. I think I have solved the problem. There seems to be a fair amount of noise somewhere in the monitoring curcuit, because the stereo and direct line outs are fine, with almost no noise. I guess I can monitor the stereo out and just get creative with the aux sends. Uggg. Used equipment...

If you are new to recording, I would suggest to sell the md 4 and get setup on a computer. I used to own an md4 and the limitations it poses only hold you back from doing great things.

i'd personally love to get aholf of an md-4 or md-8 on the cheap, becuase of the portability it would give me. sure, it's no laptop running cakewalk, but you get my drift ;o) -j
