What does the people of HRC do as a general rule for recording rock/jazz drums. My perception of it has changed a lot and now I'm just trying to gather what info I can on just general tips.

The kit is a 8 piece, 18 cymbal.
Beta 52 - Bass drum
SM57 - Top Snare
Senh. boundary mic - bottom snare
Senh. e604 - All toms and octabonds?
MXR - OH
Pencil condensers - Accent ride and one HH.

Thanks for the time and reading the ramble. All help is welcomed! :)

Haha...

The man is simply amazing. I moved 600 miles away to just start a band with this guy. Been 2 months and still can't find a bassist! Grrr....

I forgot to ask. Do you guys usually compress a little of the *drums* on the way in? Just to take a bit of the edge off or not?

Not me. Just record them raw.

Yep, you have the right idea on the set up for sure. Other then trying different mic choices which BH gave you a sample of I think you are on the right track.

For compression on the drums. To tape I used to use compression on the way in. Now with digital I usually don't unless the drummer is very unpracticed and doesn't keep a steady level.

But compressing after it is recorded give you more options, especially if you have several separated track's to work with.

Nice kit by the way, good choice on the move if he can play it as good as it looks.

Kewl. Thanks Noize. I've just always kind of tossed the idea around of compressing it. But, I guess since I'll be tracking at a higher bit rate than 44.1, I don't really need to compensate for the lower headroom with compression.

Now, do you guys know of a good external reverb modulation? I've got a few good ones in my Waves Bundle, but I'd like to have at least one good rack set.

Oh man, I luv the reverb in Waves ! The best-sounding/easiest-tweaking plugin verb out there ! That said, Behri makes a killer outboard verb... I think it's called the ProVerb2496, or something like that... uber-flexable with dry/wet dual-mono outs for each side . Might be something to look at .

Killer drum kit, btw ! = )

Thanks Hue.

I'm always a bit skeptical of Behri. though. is it better than the one that's in there bigger board?

My recommendation would be to look for a used Alesis Quadraverb 2 or a Digitech TSR-12 unit. They can be had pretty reasonable and the Alesis has got some killer reverb on it and is pretty easy to edit even on the tiny little screen.
