Latency, Latency, Latency

Hello.

I'm currently using a Microsoft HD sound card for my recordings. The latency however is not so good. What would the recommended setting be, say on Asio4All, in order that I receive a better note-on time.

Cheers,
LowIntensity.

p.s. this site is a godsend.

Well sadly you won't improve the latency of an on board sound card by much if at all. You can try lowering the buffer down to maybe 128 or 256 if it is higher then that.

But be aware that these chips were not meant for this type of use. Even a fancier SoundBlaster type unit will not achieve it with ease at all.

One thing that might help is to turn off any unnecessary programs that might be running in the back ground or down in the task bar. This will help ease a bit of the system pressure that might be causing the issue as well by hogging resources.

Sorry that isn't exactly the perfect solution but it about the only alternative with those type of sound chips.

Thanks for the advice Noize2u, but could you tell me one other thing: what soundcard SHOULD I buy, say if I had a PC and the ability to upgrade my soundcard?

Well there are many choices out there depending on exactly what you are recording and how you want to go about it.

If you are only recording one instrument at a time a simple 2 in 2 out interface will work. If you are on a laptop or even PC the USB interfaces such as the Line 6 UX-1 or UX-2 are great as they give you some killer guitar amps, bass amps and even microphone pre amp models that are absolutely killer. I personally use the UX-2 and have used it with a pair of condenser microphones running phantom power and its not had a lick of trouble.

I often use it instead of my higher end multi i/o interfaces and love it.

There are also pci card based interfaces as well that work great and are very stable such as the M-Audio delta 2496 and ESI's Juli@ card which is similar to the 2496 only it gives you 1/4" plug options as well as the RCA type jacks.

Let me know what type of music and how many inputs or output's you might need at once and we can narrow it down a bit as well.

But if you use guitars and the like you might really want a look at the Line 6 units as they can really save time. And they are also portable as well if you are using a laptop.
