I am about to buy a delta 44 and need to chose a multitracking software program that is under $250. What's the deal. Am I going to be able to get something or am I going to have to wait for the next pay check?

I've read the frequently recommended equipment page, but i don't know if i can afford the good ones, and one of them said the item has been discontinued. Are cakewalk/cooledit/etc. as good as those other ones. I think i may have seen this question elsewhere. I'm going to go look.

I have been using Cakewalk Sonar 2.2 for the last week or so in my studio, and have been working with it at Noizes studio for the last couple months and I have to say, I am incredibly impressed...stunned, actually...it is a huge step since the last time I used a Cakewalk product...WOW...I am debating putting Vegas on the shelf.

When it comes down to software I've always liked to have a wide variety, I'm a bit hooked when it comes to buying software and have spent far to much money over the years, money which could've had me more outboard gear.

I've used, Vegas Video 3, Sonar 2 XL, Nuendo and quite a few others but my main Multitracker is, Cool edit pro 2, along side the great 'Wavlab 4' the layout is great and can do just as much.
I suppose it's down to taste and how you like the look and feel of it.
Sonar 2 is fantastic, though a bit of a fiddle at times.

Murphy mentioned a good one that I believe is under $250.00. Cool Edit Pro, and it is not a half bad app. Does not have all the bells and whistles of Sonar and the like, but you may not need all that.

I've seen the cool edit pro 2.0 demo and it seems like an easy enough layout. I think Murphy's description of sonar being like a violin may make me look at cool edit a bit harder. Is there a limit to the amount of plug-ins I can have with cool edit? And is there a sound quality difference between sonar and CE pro

I'm not putting Sonar down, it's just I like the easy access and layout of CE2 more than I do Sonar and if I like the look of a program then it's more enjoyable for me personally.

Q: Any Sound quality difference?

A: No.

Q:Is there a limit to the amount of plug-ins I can have with cool edit?

A: No, I've got thousands of plug-ins, all in a nice list down the left side: Sonic foundry, Waves native, Timeworks...all the top ones.
Unfortunately it doesn't support 'VST' plug-ins which is why I use Wavlab 4, plus the fact it's good for mastering, I wouldn't let that put you off though as I've recorded, mixed and mastered many things in CE2.

I have used CEP, tho not this newest version, and I could hear a substantial sound difference back then...but I have heard it improved vastly in the newest version...but then, so did sonar.

So far, I have mostly used CoolEditPro for my multitracking and wav editing. It is very nifty. I haven't used the newest version which I'm dying to try because among other things you can add effects in the multitrack view so you can hear how the effect works in the mix. Not having that feature has proved to be a pain in the @$$ in the past but does lead to good imagination.

Also, Shouldn't all multitracker have roughly the same recording quality? I thought it was the soundcard that done the work and the software just provided the extras.

And one thing to note, I believe CEPro does not handle midi at all. If you are going to be doing any midi stuff this will be something to consider when looking at the applications out there.

Everything plays a role is sound quality. Yes, the sound card surely plays a huge role, but how efficiently the software handles the sound and how good their audio engines and codecs are made play a role as well. Back in Cakewalk 8 I just could not use it cuz I could hear a huge difference with that, but now with Sonar they have improved it A LOT. CEP may have as well.

Actually Noize, i'm not a midi type of guy, so CEP works out for me perfectly.

What is the newest Cool Edit Pro? Is it 2.0, or is it just called "Pro"?

Kool, then it sounds as if CEP 2.0 is the best choice for you. And yes, it is Cool Edit Pro 2.0.

Peace
