Just got the new camera. So, I took out to this gig that I had with the Roots & Gnarls Barkley.

The event was for Barack. And just happened to be the hottest day of the year so far. 97 Degrees and high humidity, and 20 hours.

Cool shots indeed. The tuba is a nice touch.

This is taken with my POS camera. Actually the camera is ok but concert shots are a tough one.

This is Heart from a couple months ago.

Nice color's in that one. Heart rocks though. I'd still hit on Nancy.

Nice shot beerhunter!

The only lens that I have that could get the colors is a 50mm lens. And I was 135 feet away from the stage.

So they are very hard to see the action.

Rob that picture turned out pretty good. Is your new camera good in low light situations?

Yeah, the camera is great in low light.

The problem is that the two telephoto lenses that I have, the f stop is high.

The 50mm is a 1.8. So that one is great in low light. It's just a fixed lens.

So I can't zoom in. The telephoto lens that I was looking at that has a low f stop is about 5 grand.

I think I will skip that one.

Nice pix guys for sure. The color's are killer in those indeed.

Kinda funny BH, in the small pic with the Doc in the video screen it looks as though he is wearing a mask. But when ya click it to enlarge it you can see its a hat. Looks like he has been working out though as his forearms are looking a bit larger then in days of old.

Hey great stuff guys! Rob it looks like you are giving that new Canon a workout huh? What do you think of it so far? I'm sure your not looking to spend anymore money but the XTI feels 100% better if you add the extended battery grip to the bottom. It helps to balance those longer zoom lenses too.
I'm going to add this shot of the Four Tops from the same event I posed about in the other thread. The reason for this one is that it was shot with the same 50mm 1.8 lens that Rob is talking about in his last photo. That is one great lens for the money.

I hope this works, it would not let me copy and paste tonight.

I just picked up the 28-135mm IS USM lens off craigslist for $300, good deal on my part as it came with filters and a collapsing rubber hood.

Problem is, at 3.5 I must have a pretty well lit stage. I would love a F2 or lower for concert shots, how much that bad boy run you guys?

Thanks Beerhunter. I really like your Rush shots too by the way. Those chicken roasters are great!

That is a good deal on the 28-135, they run about $400 new without any accessories. The 50mm 1.8 I picked up from Adorama for about $85 new. It is a surprisingly sharp lens for the money. The only drawback being its a fixed lens so you have to be pretty close to your subject, no zooming. Or it will take great wide shots like what Rob posted above if you step back a bit.
One of the other photographers I was working with at that last event had the 28-135 in his kit and he seemed to like it.

Yeah, it was close to $450 from anywhere shipped to Alaska. The filters and hood were a definite bonus.

Looking at the 50mm, I am getting one, that is indeed a great price on anything 1.8. Most of the time I am shooting local shows where if I ask the band they are more than happy to let me on stage if I share my shots with them. I just enjoy it and do it as a hobby.

Oh, that thing would be compatible with my Rebel XT yes?

Yes, its compatible with your Rebel XT or any Canon EF lens mount cameras. I use mine on my XTI and an Eos Rebel T2 film camera. It would be a great lens for shooting local bands in smaller venues or clubs too.

Awesome, although it is $23 to ship it to the AK. I may check my local Kits Cameras.

That is an awesome shot of The Four Tops Diemusik.

Is that coked out jerk George still with them?

I have been working out at FOH for a while now. I can't wait to do monitors again. This way I can get a chance to work with the 50mm a little more.

I took a great shot with it out at FOH without a flash. The only reason I don't post it, is that everyone in it is wearing a Barack shirt in it.

Oh, and I am loving the XTi. Sigma lenses and all.

I thought about the extended battery, but the one that comes with it last a lot longer than I thought it would.

For me, it's just a step learning curve. Coming from the point and shot world.

I just have to get more comfortable with it. That way I won't have to look every time I want to adjust a setting.

Question: Can you still get stop motion photo when you are at a 100 shutter speed at low light? Or do you have to be at 1600 ISO and a 125 shutter speed to stop motion?

Well it all depends. The variables being, how much motion, how much light and the distance between you and your subject. The closer your are or the more you zoom in on your subject, obviously the more the motion will become evident.
In the shot I posted of the Four Tops above, they were in motion, not very fast but in motion. I was about 20 feet from them and I used 50mm, F4, 1/80 exposure at ISO 400

The cameras we are using are great cameras but still closer to the bottom of the food chain so ISO 800 and over becomes noisy pretty fast especially in low light. Its still usable but it doesn't look very nice if you try to make prints.

If your looking to get a better grasp on your camera settings go to the library or book store and look up "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. Thats the book that gave me my aha moment of understanding. Its easy to read and written in easily understood language.

Thanks guys, that is a great article. Now the settings are starting to make sense.

The whole halving and doubling for a given focal length. That is the information that I was missing.
