What exactly is and what exactly does a phantom power? When should I leave it off and why?

Feb 25, 2003 12:45 pm Two general types of microphones. Dynamic and Condenser. Dynamic microphones can generate their own signal without any power applied to them. Condensor microphones need power to create a signal. The only time you need to switch on phantom power is when using a condensor microphone that needs external power. The instructions with condensor microphones will indicate that they need phantom power. If you are not using one of those condensor microphones leave the phantom power off as it could damage equipment not ment to work with power.

Nov 30, 1999 12:00 am Walt is on the ball there, only time you're going to want to use phantom power is when you are using a condensor mic. Some boards have phantom power in em, other older boards require an outboard power supply.
