We are going to spend the next couple of months recording a 10 song project that I can hopefully have done by late August. In my past minimal experience I have had alot of floor noise while trying to record the Guitar... mostly due probably with my Boss Metal Zone pedal, but regardless I was turned on to Izotope Trash and using it to process my guitar tracks instead of recording them Wet already. What do you all think of this practice?? What do you think of this software?? What would you recommend otherwise??

I have never used it, lots of people like it, you could also look in to the Line 6 TonePort to dirty 'em up without the noise...or, I have used the Green Machine, which is pretty darn cool www.greenmachine.pwuq.net...machineamp.html

I have been looking at the TonePort family too. What I liked about the Izotope series is that it records Dry and then you have an unmolested track that you can always go back to and change the sound completely if you decide too without having to re-lay a new guitar track. Yet when you are actually recording you can still be on a setting that gives you your crunch and what not so it is pleasing to the ear why you are recording, but again the track actually lays down clean and dry. Then you apply the effects afterwards. The benefit.... again you have an unmolested clean track that can be changed in any way you see fit as long as you keep an original clean track separated from the ones you decide to add effects too. I think it works like this anyways. Can you do the same with the Toneport series or does it actually record What You Hear Is What You Get initially to where if you decide after the track is laid that you want less distortion you are pretty much subject to lay a new track... or does it actually lay a clean track too and you add the Wet after the clean track is laid, but still letting you here the distortion so you can record with feeling when laying the track?

Toneport does that feature also. You can record 3 seperate signals from your one input. One processed with all the distortion and effects, one semi-processed with just the amp and no effects, and then one dry signal. I usually only record the processed and the dry (not semi) and do exactly what you stated, tweak it after the fact. I do this either for two different tones, or simply if I don't like the original.

Sweet... maybe the toneport is the way to go. Any other opinions??

If you're looking for adding git effects after, then there's a bunch of options:

fretted synth comes to mind as it has a lot of tweakable options. Juicy77 has been mentioned, rubytube, voxengo boogex, among others.

I think Guitar Rig 3 (which I have) & Amplitube 2 are 2 of the best ones, though Revalver II is much improved over the original and would be a good choice as well. I personally don't think Trash is in the same league as the above, and has had very little improvement/updating since it's original release. I haven't found any free ones that have impressed me, but it costs nothing to try them :)

I think I still prefer my GT6 over all of them though, there is still something missing IMO with the software modelers (much like the mic'd amp vs modeled hardware debate), but there's alot to be said for the record once and try many different sounds later.

i'm just not happy with any digital modeling i've ever seen. i don't even 'get' guitar rig. from what i've seen, it has the same problems that my POD does. amplitube too. none of this stuff sounds natural to me, but i've given up trying.

Have you tried a Hush, or similar gate on your amp ? Perhaps you could lower the gain enough to work with, and then touch it up with Sonars VC64 ?(An experiment I'm considering for this evenings session.) Great plugin .

Does Guitar Rig3 allow for recording in Dry and then adding the Wet later, while hearing yourself Wet for feeling??

Yes as long as your recording software supports input monitoring (which most do).

There is a fully functional demo available if you want to try before buying.

Well I went ahead and used some of my Stimulus Check $$$ and broke down and bought the Download Version (None of the stores in Ft.Lauderdale/Miami area carry the Software version only the XE version with the Interface)of Guitar Rig 3. So far I love it... I haven't had a lot of time to play yet, but from what I've heard from some of the presets, I think it's gonna open up some new creative areas for me.
I listened to the demo of Trash and I just didn't like the sound. I love Ozone, so I thought maybe Trash would follow suit... but it doesn't even come close to GR3.
