Emu 0404 compatible software other than supplied bundle

I recently bought this interface and I'm not crazy about the software that came with. It's not bad but I'm looking for software that has wave editing abilities imbedded instead of the limited sonar le and cubase le that came with. I cannot run sonar and wavelab lite at the same time and wavelab lite doesn't work right anyway. Needless to say it doesn't help to have vista business as an op system. other than that it works fine. Would anyone know if adobe audition works with this system?

Welcome to HRC:
The EMU 0404 should be quite compatible with most of the DAW (digital audio workstation) platforms out there.

Sonar and Cubase (at least the full versions) are extremely good programs. The 'lite' versions are just limited. Why Audition? Just wondering, not knocking it.

I use the EMU PCI0404 and I love it with Cubase. That said, I'm a "one man band".Also, the Patchmix program that runs the card is a little tricky.

What are you trying to achieve?

The problem that I have with sonar is that it's wave editng is very limited. It's not very user fiendly so perhaps I haven't discovered all the capabilities, but the thing I use mostly are normalizing and silence function within the wave as well as various other effects like reverb and the like.I used to record on cool edit and what made it cool was that it had a built in wave editor so I didn't have to close one program to so my sound card would work on another ( like wave lab which seems to have vista issues - it closes as soon as i click on open file) and it doesn't want to run at the same time as sonar. Cubase is better but it also seems to have some bugs - it hangs sometimes when I close it after recording. I'll fill in the bio as soon as i find it, thanks!

Are you kidding on the Sonar thing? They have the most advanced wave editor available at the moment. It has more tools then any other DAW and they are standard.

As well it is the most user friendly of the big boys. Open Logic or one of the others and you'll see what I mean.

Sonar has had the wave editor built in since way back when it was known as Pro Audio. No need to open another application at all. It is all right there at a click of the mouse.

Also, I run Wavelab while Sonar is open without any trouble what so ever.

It sounds to me like you have some other issues going on with Vista like other things running in the back ground that are causing issues.

Sometimes "run as administrator" can cure various ills in Vista.

No honestly not kidding.Though I could probably blame most of my hassles on vista, or myself (but I'm looking at the other possibilties first ;). I found cool edit's (now adobe audition) wave editor alot more user friendly (perhaps I should rather say "easier to find") and in Sonar LE i can't find it. There's a piano roll and a loop constructor and some other stuff but none that I've found to function like a wave editor enabling me to zoom in to a wave to do fine editing like i could with cool edit. I can crop clips and fade in, out, cross fade, but no silencing of unwanted audio, reverse and the like. As i mentioned, wavelab wont play back if I have sonar running same thing happens if media player is open. Other than that the program works well.

in sonar you edit waves right in the track view...read up on the help files in sonar.

I've checked them, perhaps you have an better Sonar version. Compared to Cool edit the editing is limited to cropping and fading. I can zoom in to the smallest detail but that's as far as I get. I can add effects but no editing except for what i've mentioned. I'll keep looking but I'm not used to taking so long work a program.

In Sonar you have to go to options, audio and click the button that says to share the audio drivers with other applications. That is how to prevent Sonar from hogging the audio drivers.

They do it that way so someone can't accidentally stop a real time mix down by clicking into another application.

Great, I was not aware of that! I'll try it out and let you know. The last time I spent this much time on a pc was way back with Win 98, then I joined the army. Checking on the net I saw alot of people who have issues with vista, so I considered getting Xp, but I'll check and see if it solves my problems, considering Sonar hogs the drivers it might just solve all the issues I was experiencing. Thanks, I'll keep you posted.

I made the change in Sonar and even found a similar check box in the emu playback output properties, a checkbox "allow applications to take exclusive controle of this device" which I unchecked. So while I had media player running this while i was on the net, as soon as sonar started up my sound (on media player) went completely crappy radio distorted, as it did before. Is this normal? My net connection is by bluetooth device, i can try it without the connection and see if it sorts out the problem also Ill restart and see if it helps. Should I expect seemles operation from this sound card with multitasking?

Well, not always are you going to get seamless operation. The E-mu drivers are not a completely stable driver at times. I'm not completely familiar with them but I know they have had issues with this type of thing before, but I would assume they had them sorted out by now. Maybe take a look on the E-mu site to see if they have a more current driver update and give that a try.
