My 2 friends and I started a band. I am a guitarist, one friend a drummer/bassist, and the other a vocalist. For recording we are using a Griffin GarageBand Guitar Cable, shown here: www.amazon.com/Griffin-Ga...7818&sr=8-1
We are planning to use that cable for guitar AND bass, but I am unsure if it will work on bass. For drums, acoustic guitar, and vocals, we are using MXL 990/MXL 991 Recording Microphones. And last we are using Apple's Logic Express as recording software. The only one of those items that we have actually purchased is the Griffin Garage Band Guitar Cable. So if you know anything about the compatibility of this potential recording setup, or have a warning for us to not purchase these items, please post. Thank you very much! I have attempted to do research on these things, but to no avail. I was hoping you guys could help a fellow home recorder out!

To kick things off, that Griffin-cable is a only an expensive guitar cable with an adapter. Guitar cables work on bass right?
Condenser microphones such as the MXL990 require 'phantom power' to operate, which is a 48V power supply for the microphone. Also, all microphones require a 'pre-amp', that boosts the very low mic signal, into a higher volume 'line-level' signal, which lets your soundcard record it.
Therefore, to use a mic you'll need to have a preamp. Options are endless, but bang-for-the-buck wise, I'd suggest going for a new soundcard/preamp combo. For example, the toneport UX-1, which people round here seem to like. www.zzounds.com.../item--LINTPUX1
To use both MXL's at once, you'll need s soundcard with 2 mic inputs such as the UX2 www.zzounds.com.../item--LINTPUX2
Hope this helps!

May 10, 2008 10:33 pm CS has it right on. The cable will work but they are selling it for way to much money. But yes, it should work on bass just as well as guitar.
for the mic's CS is spot on. Those are nice mic's but you will need a pre amp and pahntom power supply which something like the UX units from Line 6 will give you for a decent price.
May 10, 2008 11:29 pm Thx guys! That really helped! I am so grateful! Do you think that the Griffin Cable and mics are compatible with Logic Express?
May 10, 2008 11:36 pm Does the UX2 work with a Mac Mini and/or iMac? Will it work with Logic Express and Garageband? How does it connect to the computer? Firewire? Thanks.

May 10, 2008 11:53 pm It is connected via USB and I do believe there are drivers for the Mac. I have not checked the Line 6 website but you can go there and check it out to make certain there are here.
www.line6.com
ON the cables themselves they should work with any onboard sound card that hs that size input jack.
