May 10, 2008 03:22 pm Recording a mono signal as a mono track is fine. Most sources are mono. Some sources are stereo, like a keyboard with L & R outputs, or a drum machine with L & R outputs. These can be recorded as a stereo track.

In your software, there will be a PAN button somewhere. If you have left and right speakers, then twisting the pan button (or slider) will move the sound from one side to the other.
The software creates the stereo field for you, from the mono (or stereo) signals.

May 10, 2008 09:00 pm Yep, if you are worried that a mono track only plays on one side don't be as you simply adjust the pan to one side or the other, or in the center which will allow it to play on both left and right side at once. Mono is really the preferred method to record vocals and most other instruments anyway.

May 10, 2008 11:33 pm You guess wrong: most things are recorded in mono my friend. As pjk said, that's what the "Pan" slider is for. Stereo just means that different signals are coming out of the left and right speaker: mono means the signals are identical. If you've got a "beat" that's already in stereo (as most are), and your vocals are in mono (as virtually all of them are and have been since recording technology has existed), that just means that your vocals will be panned in the center, with the elements of your "beat" panned either to one side or the other of the speakers.
