Can you lend me your ears?

Hey all, I'm hoping that some of you guys might have a moment to check out a song that I have uploaded called "Second Chance". This is the latest song we are working on a AE class. I finished up this mix last night but I haven't had a chance to check it out on other systems and I haven't had time to run it through HarBal either.
It is due tonight so any feedback would be awesome. That way I could tweak it a bit before I have to go to class.
Cheers!

Listening now. Nice groove you've got there with the rhythm guitar.

A couple of thoughts:

- You may want to EQ the lead vocal to give it just slightly more clarity. It's kinda muddy in the midrange at this point. I think it SHOULD be to a degree, but there are moments in the verses where it's just a bit too muddy.

- Also on the vocal, it may be a bit too far out in front of the guitar and piano. Again, not much, but I think you've got some really good guitar and piano fills that get slightly lost in the shuffle.

- I like the mixing on the drums.

- Much as with the vocal, I'd punch up the EQ on the lead guitar outro...the volume seems fine, but it sorta hangs back in the mix. I'd like to hear it take over when the vocal subsides. Alternatively, you might just pan it a bit more to center at that point.

Excellent points thermocaster. I was wondering about the vocal EQ. I had already increased the high end so I was hesitant to do more.
I have a feeling that running this track through HarBal maybe all that is needed. It could use an overall EQ boost in the high end I think.
The panning automation is a good idea for the guitar outro.

BTW - just for the record... this is a project mix for our class. I'm only the producer/engineer on this one.

I agree with thermo, the vocals are WAY out front and a mite muddy. The bass and drums seem kinda loud in the mix for me...that said I really dig the bass part, it just seems to drown out some rather cool guitar.

Good song tho, I like the song itself...

Ya the vocals are upfront too much. I think this is probably to do with the muddiness. I'm compensating for the lack of clarity which makes me pull them forward too much. Thanks for the tips. I have enough time to make those changes before I go to class.

OK, I simply need to quit my job and hang out here and listen and read all day. I wonder if I could make a living simply surfing the net? Then I could stay in touch at HRC all day long and not miss any of this important stuff.

Oh ya, I will give it a listen tomorrow anyway even though I missed out today.

Too late for your class but, I pretty much agree with what has been said so far. The guitars are really being overpowered by everything else, mostly some eq work and bring the guitars up a bit and I think the levels will kind of take care of themselves on the rest.

Well I have to agree with most of the above. The bass could use a bit of boost in the lower midrange to give it a bit more bite. But ya, the guitars sound very set back in the mix, both the main and the midrangey sounding one. The drums as well could use a little tweaking to give them a little more bite as well. Brass is pretty good though. I'll agree on the vocals too. Some kind of filter thing going on with them that is giving them a lot of low end and not much sparkle.

Cool tune though for sure.

Hey all, I had a chance to apply some of your suggestions and also did a bit of HarBal on this version. If you get a chance, check it out. I think I've made some good progress.

Much better from here. The vocals sound more settled in the mix now. Kind of like Dave Mathews sounding in a way but with more bite.

The drums are sounding good now with some better tone to them, still a tad loud but much better.

Got a good groove to it as well.
