I'm needing some outboard storage. I found a Seagate unit that seems to fit the bill, for $120.

I'm looking for 250GB or larger, preferably 500GB.

What units are you using?

Herb, I use the Ethernet version of this and can honestly say I haven't had any problems at all.

Thanks for the input, guys. I went ahead and ordered the Seagate. Get this - after I ordered it, I did a little research (I know, I know. You're saying "Herb, ya weirdo, didn't you get that backwards?"), and found that it has a bit of a ventilation problem which can cause it to overheat and fail. The vents are on the bottom of the unit - brilliant design.

I'm unable to cancel the order, so I'm going to mount it upside down, and install a small fan next to it.

Or, I could drill a hole in the side of the fridge and run a USB cable...hmmmm..

Ah, fantastico idea! Thanx Dan. Maybe I should research it first to be sure it won't overheat. ;-)

Ya, there is a newer version of the Seagate unit out now that is all aluminum for better cooling.

But the Thermaltake coolers are the best. They are what I have used for years with great results.

The Iomega units are pretty good as well. And not a bad price for the name either. But I am a diehard Seagate person and usually just buy the bar case to do any external drives. I have had really good luck with the all aluminum units as they stay very cool even without an internal fan.

Now I'm just wondering if the add-on fan will fit in the case. Or will I have to take the cover off and leave it off, or just run the dang thing upside down with the fan sitting on top...

No worries. I love surprises.

I think the Seagate case has room for the cooler in it. I know my little aluminum ones don't, but they don't need it. I left that litlle sucker running for several days and forgot to turn it off but no ill effects were suffered.
