OK enough with the unresolvable religious debates. Let's talk music!

Dr. Dog is a relatively unknown band out of Philly. They've toured with My Morning Jacket and appeared on the late night talk show circuit. They have a definite home-recorded quality to their songs, but their songwriting is actually really good.

I heard a song of theirs on a compilation of SXSW artists from eMusic. I was really taken by their contribution to the mix. It was a Mott The Hoople sounding song with awesome chord changes and interesting lyrics. It sounded like it was recorded in the early 1970s, with that signature bass guitar and drum sound of the pop rock records of that era.

Well I picked up their latest LP "We All Belong" off of eMusic the other day and I've been delighted with it. Its the same lo-fi recording techniques, with very very Beatles-inspired songwriting. They have a couple of duds on the album, but all in all its a terrific find. A jewel in the rough, if you will. They know how to keep it interesting through the whole album.

I just can't believe that these guys aren't famous! Anyways, if you find yourself on a search for some new music, give their song samples a listen on eMusic and see if they're up your alley:

Just took a quick listen to the samples on my laptop speakers (tinny).

That's some fantastic stuff. I can hear the Mott/Beatles/Badfinger/ELO influences. They seem to have a little Jellyfish/Spacehog going on there.
In other words....RIGHT UP MY ALLEY!

So talent and musicality somehow has some vague relation to fame? Not any more my friend.

Good find, Tad. Thank you.

Jellyfish are one of my all time favourite bands. Nobody really has heard of them.... Amazing musicianship, production, songwriting etc.
Barely a blip on the radar.
Now, everyone has heard of the Spice Girls, right?

Ya TallChap, the best and worst musicians I have heard have no connection with fame. Same thing happened to the "succesfull home recorder's" thread. Assumed postulate is also fame. Gotta be some paradyme, like good over evil or something I guess.

Oh crap! It just hit me, those words could cause another debate, with posts so long I will never bother reading them. Better fix this right now.

Yup I'm right! I have all knowledge of all! Don't bother responding, you're wrong. Next thread please.

That should do it.

This is just too AWESOME! They are friends of mine. As a matter of fact, the drummer Justin, was my upstairs neighbor. He is a great guy, and believe it or not, is not really a drummer. He is a thrash guitar player. He belonged to a band called It's Turbo Time.

Last year we saw him for the first time in about 7 months. It was at the WXPN fest.(The one where I had my picture taken at that is on the Bauder web site.) That's when we saw him setting up the drum kit. Puzzled, we had to ask. That is when he explained that the band wanted him, but they already had a guitar player, but no drummer. So, for three months, he practised with them as the drummer, and did well.

I'll have to tell them that you guys love their stuff. I think they will get a kick out of it.

Oh wow Rob that's too cool! Definitely let them know that they have some new fans.

A certain music magazine that I read regularly gave them poor marks, and Dr. Dog have reminded me how I shouldn't rely on other people's impressions as much as I do. This album is terrific, and I'd pay cash money to have the songwriting talent they do.

And the drumming is one of my favorite things about this album! They're right off of Rise and Fall....

Tadpui,

Don't give up. There must be something we can talk about without putting on our armor and charging windmills. Everything I can think of could be twisted into an ego battle, but I have faith in your creative abilities!
