Question about laptop sound cards and audio interfaces

My Dell Vostro 1700 is on its way, and I plan to use it for music making/production. However, I have heard that the sound cards that come with them are quite rubbish. So, obviously I'd want a good sound card for music making.

I also plan to get an audio interface, probably a Focusrite Saffire. What I was wondering was, would the Saffire overrule the sound card, or for good music making/production would I still need a good sound card or is that a different thing? Also, if I do need a good sound card, could anyone direct me to one that would fit in a 54mm ExpressCard slot?

Thanks.

Your audio interface would replace your sound card as far as making music goes. You'll use your interface for both input (recording) and output (playback/monitoring).

Sometimes its nice to keep the stock sound card for gaming since they usually support 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, etc. surround. They're generally good for playback for games and iTunes, but they just don't stack up when it comes to recording and monitoring.

So yup, the Focusrite will be your sound card for both input and output for the recording part.
