Hi,
Just starting out in the world of recording, and would like to get some advice on various things in regards to throwing together a little home studio. I've been playing music for about 9 years, or so!
So far, I've gotten my hands on an mbox 2 mini, and I'm going to be using a Macbook (OSX 10.5), Protools 7.5 LE, and an sm58 (for both acoustic guitar and vocals, unless you guys can suggest a different mic)
The software is installed, and running fine; but when the mic is in, there's no audio coming through, not even on the mix window... I'm not sure if I need more gear to get going....
Can you guys suggest anything else I could need to get going? I'm open to any suggestions.

Thanks, I may be using this forum pretty often in my project, so please be patient with me, as I said, I'm new to recording and whatnot!

Hello John, welcome to HRC.

I'm not familiar with what you've listed, but I can try to help out.

You will need to be more specific about what you write. There are a lot of variables, and detail will help us all out.

So mic is plugged into MINI xlr input? You won't need phantom for a SM58.

PT can see the mbox? if yes, then you may need to 'arm' a track for recording. This means that the software will listen to a specified input, notably, the mbox input.

In other software, there are monitor option, like on /off/ auto. This way you can hear your signal coming through the PC, or not, your choice. You may need to switch on monitoring.

But if you're not seeing signal in the PC, then I'd think the 'arm' thing first.

Hopefully someone else more capable in PTLE can chime in and help out.

Hi pjk,
Thanks for your response. Yep, you were right at 'arming' the track for recording! Seems so simple now (as I said, I'm pretty new to recording!)
I'm in the process in buying a couple of monitors, as research has taught me that listening through headphones, or through the on board speakers doesn't do ANY audio recording justice.
I'm just using the MBox 2 Mini along with the protools program at the moment; slowly getting to grips with protools.
If you could suggest any literature thats worth buying, please feel free!!
Thanks again.

heh, i know nothing of PTLE, or any related books, or their worth. Sorry.

I'm pretty much a hack / internet scrounger. Read up on ideas, try some out, and get creative when I get stuck. =). I think it's been working, but I haven't put out a ton of work, so it's hard to tell.

Glad to hear it's working for ya.

Yep, monitors will help. I use a pair of tannoys, plus my little cheapo creative labs 2.1 system (wally-world: 20$).

I tune down down...

Easy PJK!

When there was a question on what I meant about getting something from a friend, I got attacked by a few saying I was a pussy for hacking software! Lol...

I wish I could help too John, I'm just not a ProTools guy either.

I think I've seen some Tutorial DVD's for PTLE somewhere. Not sure though. Those type of things are always a help for me. Try YouTube as well. It's how I got started in Nuendo.

heh, no, I mean i'm a hack engineer, like i've not learned from a class, only by doing on my own.

like a hack programmer, or a hack musician. self taught, and sometimes guerrilla.

Internet scrounger meant I scrounge the internet for people's ways of doing recording things.

I can understand the mis-interpretation, rereading it again =/

Yeah on the youtube though, I've seen a few reaper tutorials on there, with pretty good stuff.

Hey.
I'm new here as well, but I'm old to recording.

For acoustic guitar and vocals, an SM58 isn't your best bet. I would go with some sort of condenser mic (condenser mics are the standard for recording things like acoustic guitars and vocals and other acoustic instruments).
You can record with the SM58, but it will take quite a bit of production to get it sounding professional.

I just started a website dedicated to building a cheap home studio, you might check out the microphones page www.cheaphomestudio.com/microphones.html
Feel free to email me at the site with any other questions.
