I'm not a Mac guy and don't even recommend them. Too much money and the hardware and software is very limited compared to the PC.

Hey noise
when you say the mac is limited, do you mean in regards to things you can do to set it up for recording?
do you know anything mac wize that i can do to make mine run smoother??
I've been looking around but cant find much.
Im happy with it n all but like a pc it has its hassels, sometimes when im recording or working with audio, i get drop out but mostly i get it sounding like it has a metalizer effect on it or like its being played in a tunnel with distortion on it. sometimes i have to restart cubase le4 to get it to stop.
when i record i have the buffers on 128 and when i play back i have it on 512.
would you know the reason why it does this?

I think Noize means the Mac is limited in terms of software- there's a few major companies who havn't made their software available for mac yet, like Cakewalk Sonar.

That metalized sound is usually the USB port or firewire port you're using- I get it on occasion with my Tascam US-144 and I honestly think it's a Tascam issue that they refuse to acknowledge. Try unplugging- replugging your interface and it should clear up the problem.

Also, I set the buffer to 256 while recording, but then again that's just my system though- yours may be entirely different.

I've been looking here and there for you, but I can't hash up anything useful for mac tweaking. I'll let you know if I find anything useful though.

Deon that is what I was referring to. Just the limited amount of software available. The Mac is good when it is matched with proper hardware and all so not saying they can't do the job.

What interface are you using to record at the moment. Keith has a good point it may lie in the interface were the odd sound is coming from.

If you are using a Mac Mini or iMac it is really important to get an external drive for audio only. You absolutely do not want to record to your system drive. This is a basic rule.

If your buffers are set too low this can cause dropouts. A buffer setting of 512 is not unreasonable.

I love Apple computers though I use both Mac and PC. They both have their pros and cons. Mac has the plug and play end down pat.

Regarding the MacPro. The current ones are Dual Quad. Yep 8 processor cores. That's insane! Support up to 16 gigs of Memory and 4(?) Terabytes or Hard Drive space. Killer fast machines.

If you decide to go with a G5, get the fastest one you can afford. If you get a 1.8, make sure it's a dual processor unit. A single processor probably won't cut it. That being said, it won't be long before Apple cuts support for the G5's. They're already on their last legs with the G4's and rightfully so.

LOL typos! 89 processors? Now that would be insane!

Hey noize,
ok i get what yer sayin bout the limtitations etc. i only ask coz im trying to learn more about the Mac thing.

as for the interface, im using a TASCAM US1641. the metalizer sound doesnt happen all the time just enough to give me the shytes.
Ihave been recording on 128 buffers which sounds like it may be too low, so i changed it to 192 i think it is.
and playback on 512. should i go higher for playback n mixin etc?

im just pluggin the interface into the usb in the back of the iMAC.
There are a few diffrent ones. a couple on the keyboard.
Having said all this i've done zero tweakin on the computer to date. not sure what to do, if there is anything.

There is some information on the following link that should be useful to both mac and pc users when setting up.

Hueseph when you say get an external for audio only do you mean for storage or to work from. I picked up a 500GB drive with the intention of moving files to it. I just want to make sure I understand.

To work from. You can do whatever you want to the files once they're on disc but when you are recording, any interruption in the writing could result in a glitch. Your OS is constantly accessing the system drive so it's a big no no.

Hey Deon, you may want to make certain that you are plugged into a USB port that is a primary port connected directly to the MoBo of the Mac. Don't use the keyboard ones as they are similar to using a hub and that is a no no with an interface as they just don't seem to stay connected.

I guess one thing I can suggest as well is to make certain you have the latest drivers installed and that you have the onboard sound card disabled so it doesn't mcuk up the operation of the Tascam.

thanks noize,
hey i didnt think of disabling the on board card.
unknow thats what it kinda sounds like...its jumpimg off it driver or between sound cards or something.
Dunno if it can do that or not, just appears that way.

i do have the usb plugged into the iMAC itself, though i just put it into the first socket.
Thanks for that.

mmm, i will have alook around the iMAC see what the go is, though i not sure exactly what im looking for in regards to sound card disable.

if you see a topic posted soon asking, "how to fix my mac" you'll know its gone pear shaped!

Ya, not certain that is it but its worth a look indeed. I know that many have had issues with drivers conflicting and causing issues very similar to this.

Ya, that is why I don't care to mess with a Mac. I'm not sure what they would even refer to the onboard sound card as. I'll try and poke around a bit to see if I can find anything else on how to do it.

I know I just boot into the bios on my PC and disable it there, but not sure if that is also do-able on a Mac or not.
