started working with LE4 today.
Im running a mic from in front of a cab into my interface.
Thing is i cant seem to see a level metre reading on the track in LE4. I can see a level on the transport panel,(where the play, ffw. and rew. buttons are) but that's it.
It records fine but is coming through the left hand speaker only.
so its comin thru in mono.
The track is sayin stereo in and stereo out.

i gather its a set up thing or somethin i've missed somewhere.

hoping someone can give me an idea.
Cheers.

There should be a button on the track for monitoring (it has a speaker on it) that you can push to get a level meter. SX3 has it, I would think LE4 does too.

Why do you need to record it in stereo?

If your recording a mono signal then its just going to duplicate the signal when recorded to a stereo track. I usually record everything to mono tracks and then I can just pan it down the middle if I want to.

Anyhow, does the waveform show a signal on the left and right, or did it just record it on the left?

You definitely want to record in mono. Make sure that your sound card inputs aren't linked or bridged. I have an M-Audio card whose inputs I can link into 2 stereo pairs or 4 discrete mono inputs. That's controlled on my sound card's control panel software.

When I put them in stereo mode, in Cubase I can only select "Input 1 L+R". If I put them in mono mode I can select either "Input 1" or "Input 2". That's what you're going for here. However that's accomplished with your particular sound card.

i do want to record in mono definatly and yeah tadpui i know what your saying about input1 and 2. thats how it was with just straight LE. This ones a bit different. cant see it.

would i need to press the monitor button on LE4 like redneck said? I've tried it and it sounds like its doubling up with a slight delay.
pretty sure my interface has direct monitoring so i dont need that.
i will have another look see what the go is

Actually i still have the problem of not getting the level metre reading.
i can get it when i push the monitor button in, but it sounds like there are two guitars coming thru, one normal and one with a slight latency and both at the same time.
is that what the monitor button is for? just to get a level? and then turn it off?
even if thats true, i should still get a level reading on the track when i play though.

Yeah thats how I use it. I just check my levels before I start recording and then turn it off.

When you press the button you are hearing the signal sent through Cubase with whatever latency you have your interface set to. You can also hear any eq or effects you've added to the track. I usually don't add any effects until after I've recorded unless I'm doing vocals. I don't have an outboard compressor so I just use a plugin compressor. Then I can go to my audio interface software and mute my direct signal and when I press the monitor button I will only hear the one signal going through Cubase with the compressor.

I hope that makes sense.

yeah makes sense. still dont have the level reading when im recording, not that it matters really but i find it strange, like i havent set something up right unknow?
I've only been using my new iMAC for a couple days too, so im not 100% sure.

About latency on those(macs), from what i gather ya dont set it, apparently it does it for you which is cool if thats the go, havent noticed any real problems with latency so far but listening back with the monitor button on there is always going to be some i know, be good if i could make it a smidge better. then there would be next to none.
maybe a new topic?
