im using a compaq evo n610c laptop with acid pro 4.0 and flstudio. the mic input and the headphone out are right in front. whenever i plug a mic or any other line in(from my desktop ect.) i get a high freq hum. it transferrs to whatever im recording. my laptop has factory everything. 512 mb memory..soundcard ect. i was thinking i need to get a usb interface to record through. if i do that will there be any latency issues? im not having any latency probs now, i just dont know anything about usb, or if thats even what i need. will a diff sound card help? i have a pretty slim budget as well. my desktop cpu running the exact same setup doesnt have any hum, but has bad latency. any suggestions? thanks -joe p

I've got a tascam US122 that I use on my laptop. I don't have any problem latency.

Mine is a 1.8 centrino, w/ 512m ram. The hard drive is a 5400, i think, so i don't do too much with it, regarding high track counts.

The line6 UX2 has been getting good press.

Plus, you could use it on both laptop, and desktop.

I had a Toneport UX1.It's a great little unit. I outgrew it. Actually I had outgrown it before it arrived at my doorstep.

Anyway, a lot of noise problems can result from power lines. Often the problem goes away when the ac adapter is unplugged.

A decent audio interface is always worth the money. The soundcards built in to computers just aren't designed for recording audio. Well, maybe dialogue but nothing more than lectures that you plan on typing out later.

I honestly don't know how you were getting noise with the Toneport. I have my UX-2 in the worst possible spot with cables all criss crossed and I don't suffer any noise at all. I am guessing your problem was related to bad cables or another issue in the signal chain. I've been using POD since the first release and now run a fully loaded PODxt and the UX-2 without any issues what so ever.
