How about free? Free is always good when starting out. Check out Reaper or Krystal. There are a couple other as well.

I would try the freeware solutions as well. I personally use Adobe Audition and like it rather well, I think it is $300.

Yeah the freebies are a great place for beginners. Kristal is especially beginner-friendly. Audacity is another good freebie multitracking app.

Plus whenever you buy an interface it'll probably come bundled with either Cubase LE or Ableton Live Lite. Neither are best-in-class but either will get the job done, especially for a beginner.

...and the open source linux stuff (Ardour, Rosegarden, etc.) if you're really crazy... like me...

My audio interface came bundled with Cubase LE, Sonar LE, Wavelab lite, and some other programs. I used Cubase LE a lot and really liked it so later I upgraded to SX3.

Let's go sailing....
