connecting to the computer

so far ive gathered together on this site that you can record into your computer via usb, but is this the best way to record onto pc?
im not sure...but from what ive read you can use firewire to go to the pc, is that true?
and if it is, do you need a special card that you put in your computer that fits firewire inputs?

the only reason i take up your time is because so far when ive been trying to research stuff on recording it just goes way over my head
