Welcome to HRC.

And no, you really don't need an external mixer if you are using the mixer in the software. An external mixer just give you multiple pre amps and channels to use to get more then one or two instruments in at one time.

thats awesome, so i could just record one instrument at a time and mix each one on the program?

yep, the mixer doesn't really come into play when mixing, just a tool to get signal into the PC.

to use a mixer / surface during mixing, you'd need a control surface, which are much more $$$. I use a mixer for it's preamps, but do all my mixing in software, in my multitrack app.

But using a mixer on the computer wouldn't let you record with any pedals would it?

you could use pedals in tandem with a mixer, or not. they can be used independently, or together.

Using one doesn't negate or require the other.

i think that answered your question, it was kinda vague.

i know this may be late but just in case you are still wondering no you don't need a mixer if your daw has one e.g ableton. however if you are looking for ways to plug live instruments in then either a usb/firewire soundcard would be enough if it's just a mic and a guitar say or if it's dj style mixing you wunna do a midi controller will do nicely m Audio do a nice bit of kit for this.... anyway off to rig up a ua25 to my 1010lt as an interface instead of a mixer i was asking the same question not so long ago.
