Smoking Ban Challenged...in STUPID way

So, Minnesota passed the smoking ban in public restaraunts, bars, etc...so, now some lawyer that apparantly has time to burn is challenging it.

www.myfoxtwincities.com/m....1.1&sflg=1

The premise is that the built in exception is for theatrical performances...so this lawyer pulls the ol' "all the worlds a stage" trip and puts on "The Tobacco Monologues" in some bar up nort'. Everybody in the bar is an actor in the monologues...

This lawyer was telling the news how friend sof his in the legions, VFW's, etc, have been hurt by the ban and he needs to find a way to help them smoke again.

What a great guy.

Leave it to the lawyers...

On a semi-related note, our last two gigs have been in bars that are now smoke-free. Wow! What a difference! My throat didn't hurt, my eyes weren't watering, and my wife didn't make me take a shower at 2:00 am when I got home. Plus, I played the gig totally sober...didn't feel like crap the next morning!

I'm surprised that you guys are so far behind us when it comes to smoking bans. Smoking has been banned for sooo long now, I can't even remember what it is like.

we're playing this friday and i've gotta play bass in two bands that night. long story short: my sinuses, throat and face are going to fall off.

BH, not sure about Canada, but here everybody is so afraid on stepping on anyone's personal freedoms nobody will pass laws like this...that and the Tobacco companies are big lobbyists as well...I am so glad to see these bans myself, I felt so bad for the drummer in my last band that has Asthma (sp?) in late night, smokey bars...it sucked for him.

I don't like to see more regulations, I'd rather see choice, like a business owner choosing to go smoke free, but I suppose that could be business suicide doing that too, I dunno.

Not sure about all that, I just know I hate having other people smoke forced down my lungs...

Around here they just implemented the ban. After a public outcry they allowed businesses to have smoking in a dedicated area outside. Now they are doing the whole 30 feet from any window/door thing. Personally, I'm sure happy now that they have it. However, even when I smoked, I had always thought it was pretty stupid to allow smoking indoors.

In California here.

We've been smoke free for years.
People found smoking in bars here are hanged, drawn, and quartered, and their entire families are rounded up and shot, with their possessions sold at auction.

Or something...

California always imposes the most draconian rules around anything like this.

a couple bars here closed and some have really low turnout...but as long as they don't ban alcohol again it'll be fine. :) in fact prohibition just recently ended in one local city (westerville,OH).

Our local protesters put the 'outdoor smoking area' in the middle of streets...as crosswalks were the only legal place to smoke due to the 'distance from door's requirement...and well... in US pedestrians have the right of way...

most places that wouldn't change became 'private clubs' with free membership.

It's not so much an issue anymore...but I think there is an ongoing lawsuit against the city for the financial impact of the prior program which required air filtration... ie businesses sunk $50K in hepa air filters and then a few months later smoking was banned completely.

The smoking ban has come into force over here in France and whilst being a smoker i can honestly say it doesn't bother me. Infact it is much moe pleasant to be in a smoke free bar, both being a customer or playing. Plus it reduces my consumption (cigarettes not beer of course!)

as tallchap stated CA has been smoke free for at least 10 years. As dB when i came to visit i went out side to smoke when we were at the bar. It's normal for me and even as a smoker can't stand to be in a bar for any amount of time if it's full of smoke.

Odd, we've went smoke free in the UK about 6 months ago and its really nice. My mrs has really cut down her ciggie intake on a night out, your clothes and hair dont smell when you get home.

But I seem to remember smoking in a bar in San Francisco last November. I drank a lot though so I cant remember how true that is. I was really suprised that in Vegas there are no restrictions on smoking and drinking and that you could just walk around the hotels smoking and drinking.

You'd be amazed at the HVAC units in the Vegas hotels. Suped up.

That was my first thought upon rewading that post as well, everybody smokes, yet nowhere is "smokey"...those air filtering units they have out there are stellar.

Isn't that the ol urban legend that they actually pump extra oxygen into the air while filtering to keep you awake so you can gamble more? I've heard that more than once, I doubt it, but it makes for a good story.

I didn't go there to gamble I just went 'cos I'd heard you just have to see it. Its so crass, its kind of fun but terrible at the same time. It was nice to sit in front of a pair of machines next to eachother pressing the button every now and agian while getting served drinks though.

Its so hard to find the bloody exits to places and the glass in the doors is smoked so you cant actually see that its a door that leads outside.

Also, I've heard, that the glass is smoked so you don't know what time it is. You can't see that you've spent the last 14 hours in the casino, when you should have been at that seminar =0

They banned smoking in pubs here last year, and whilst I don't smoke anymore I'm anti the ban. If theres anywhere that a guy SHOULD be able to smoke it's in a bar whilst having a beer.

That said, yeah, health benefits, smoking's stoopid etc etc, I know all that, I just thing that not EVERYTHING should be banned cos it's bad, freedom of choice and all that. Dont like smoky bars? Go to non-smoky bars...
