dual monitors are great, it simply gives you more desk space, when I had a much bigger studio set up I ran duals, had my tracking app on one, all the plugins or whatever running on the other...

At work I have duals, my browser and email in one and my development tools on the other...it rocks.

Just need two monitors and a video card capable of supporting duals.

Hoo-yahh, i just stepped up at work. Got a new Q6600 w/ dual 19". Getting it set up now, and will get all my junk converted this week. It's frigity sweet.

I've had dual 17" LCDs on my recording rig for quite a while. Unless really tapped out, I doubt I'd ever go down to 1 screen again.

Just like a workspace for working pencil & paper. If you have a small 12x12 area, with multiple items to work on, the space gets small quick. Bump that to 12x24, and it's a lot easier.

an alternative is a 'virtual desktop'... still nonstandard in windows but basically one click and you can switch to a new screen... which prevents dealing with buried windows without the expense or space constraints of an additional monitor ...and works on laptops :)

I generally have 8.

Yep, more screen realestate. (sp)

I don't honestly know how I managed before duals. For me the extra screen space is an absolute must now. Being able to have multiple things right on hand is great for a good workflow. And when mixing I can expand my mixer across both screens and keep more channels visible without having to scroll back and forth on bigger projects.

But like dB stated, its nice having an app open and several of the pluggins you might be tweaking. Or for me having the app open and a synth or two open for tweaking as well.

I want duals soooo bad. My mixes usually end up around 20 tracks + bus and that wide view would be perfect size. That or one of those 30" 2560x1200 monitors would be cool :)

My PC is full of PCI cards so I don't have enough room for an additional video card. Actually, you can get a USB video card now but regardless, I picked up a 22" monitor. That is more than big enough for most reocording tasks.

If you have builtin video then there should be a free AGP, or PCIx slot available for it, I don't think other cards can use the one intended for the video card in the newer computers and they can't use the AGP slot.

I recently switched to mac and this is something I have fallen in love with and I don't think I could ever go without again. 1 screen for e-mail and browser, 1 for recording, another for photoshop and other graphic design... etc. And with one mouse click I can switch back and forth between them all. Soooooooo amazing.

How did I ever live without this feature?

When I'm here I simply use alt/tab to switch back and forth on one machine between the email and browser. I don't see the virtual desktop helping me out there. And I don't see any difference either. Its one click and I'm back and forth between the screens. My big deal with the duals is running two machines on them and being able to see what one is doing while I am working on the other.

Yeah BH, if you have onboard there is usually a free slot specifically for graphics be it AGP\PCI-E. There are always exceptions but it is pretty standard. If there is one it should still be free as PCI cards are not going to fit in them.

I use my laptop at work, and have another monitor set up to the left of it for email (Outlook) only. It makes a huge difference.
