Crazy recording ideas/techniques

I remember there was a topic about this a long time ago... probably several years, but I couldn't find it when I tried searching, so I though maybe we could just do an updated one...

Sometimes I think sounds, effects, and weird recording techniques can almost be as much of an influence in songwriting as anything else.

A friend of mine gave me his old copy of Guitar Rig (version 2, I think), and some of the weird effects that are set up in there sometimes inspire a whole song just because I search for ways to make use of the guitar effects.

Even beyond that, I've been using my keyboard with GuitarRig, too. Piano sounds with wild, off the wall guitar effects can be very unique.

Another trick I've been playing with is putting two or more VSTi's on a single MIDI track to create new blended sounds. Some unique things can come out of that as well.

What kinds of things do you do to get crazy sounds?

Maybe if it's possible you could post some samples of what you're talking about, too. If other people are interested, I'll try to get some samples of the things I was talking about, too.

For guitar ideas, I will often capo for weeks at a time, and noodle around with new ideas. Usually I'll come up with different tonal variants, just because of the different key.

I admit, that I too like to experiment and find new ways of putting things together, but alas, I've been too busy to really try new things out lately.

I poked around with 12 string sounds, to come up with the somewhat-heavy effected lead on Time in a bottle (in my profile). It doesn't sound much like a 12 string now, but it was at one point =).

I'll be anxious to see what people have to offer, maybe glean some new ideas =).

me and my mate wrote a really odd tribal sounding song once but the main beat was a loop made up of me taking a bit out of an apple, slamming a big book shut, a salt shaker, taken the cap off a bottle of beer (we had you undestand already drank a lot at this point) and a squeeky door. Every now and again we'd stick the gong sound in from that film studio, is it paramount where the bloke bangs the gong?

Just layered loads of accounstics over the top playing mainly different versions of Em with little variations

JDOD, thats really cool, i've used a blender as a sound effect, and the new x box when it loads up has real kinda swishing/skipping cd noise through the speakers, gonna record that too.
one's limitation is the brain really.

I dont know Deon. I find that getting utterly smashed helps! No limits. ha ha.

In fact once I sort out my current software and micing problems I'll have a fiddle with some really odd loops and share them with you guys.

now i gotta make a cool loop out of weird noises

when I first bought pro tools, I had been waiting for months just thinking of all the cool things I could do with recording software. So one of the first things I did was take my ceramic/glass light fixture off of my celing fan, put a mic in it and placed it in front of my guitar amp (the mic facing away from the amp, so the lightbulb cover would collect the sound) and recorded some leads. i didn't use the track, but it was a really cool effect.

ha ha, I can feel a bizzare looped noises song competition coming on! Might be worth a separate thread though!

Anyone know if there is some sort of drop box we could put MP3s. where people could access them. I dont want to spam the members music on here with me looping odd nioses and singing through a pair of old earphones going into a distortion pedal and a wah wah.

I like the light fixture idea. I might try that.

Some other ideas I've done...

A crash cymbal dropped an octave or two and slowed down makes for an awesome and easy gong sound.

A friend an I were working on a song and we needed some big huge church bell sounding bells. My keyboard had a "Tubular Bells" setting, but it was kinda weak. We recorded one hit from the keyboard in a multi-track session by itself. We duplicated it 4 times... lowering one 2 octaves, lowering another 1 octave, raising the 3rd one octave, and the 4th 2 octaves. We panned the -1 octave and the +1 octave to the sides slightly, then added different amounts of reverb to each of the 5 tracks. With a little mixing of the 5 tracks we ended up with a MONSTROUS sounding bell. It was very cool.

Ha ha, I've just added about 30 seconds of bonkers weirdness into the electronica section. Is odd, particularly with headphones. The description wityh it describes some og the noises.
