if so i'd like to hear it. i'm recording what was once an acoustic song, and it still needs to be mainly that. however, it sounds like it's possible to keep the doubled acoustic part prominent even as i pan two distorted tracks far left and right.

and i'm wondering if that's retarded. i don't know if i can think of a song that's done that and don't know if it's a good idea.

I know of a good example, if you have itunes or something you could probably catch 30+ seconds to get an idea but you would be much better off hearing the whole song, 100% awesome. Even though live it is very clean, I think the two mixed sound fantastic.

Artist = Masters Of Reality
Album = Live at the viper room
Song = John Brown

Forty, I'm not sure if you have heard our song "I Know She Understands" but it has a healthy blend of heavy guitars mixed with acoustic. Seems to be sort of what you are describing.

You can listen to it here;

I seem to be working on an entire album that has heavy guitars and acoustic guitars in it.

Here's an early recording of one of them (posted it here years ago):

Every time I listen to it now I can't wait to re-record it since I've learned a thing or two since then...

That is quite excellent Tad. Never heard that before, probably before my time at HRC. I think the wife would love that one, is there somewhere I can download it?

Hey thanks Tripps! My music in my profile has been in shambles lately since my host has moved, but that one should be intact in my profile, under the album "This Isn't Yesterday". I believe that I made it downloadable. If not just let me know.

That's the title track to the album I've recently resolved to record...can't wait to redo that one with better drums and clearer micing!

I like the tone on it personally. I am all about a little raw leaking through :)

If the wife gives me some action while listening to your song, I will give a long distance high five.

edit: no high five for you, download is broken :)

Hahaha deal Tripps :-)

I don't know what's up with the music in my profile now that I've restored the links...nothing will play nor download.

Here'a link to my host, you can "save as" from here:

ha, that's funny.

Anywho, i like your distorted guitar tone, Tadpui. Very creamy but still edgy. Nicely done.

Got it, thanks much :)

edit: I had a cool high five hand posted. But then I saw this... I think if we ever high fived in real life it would probably look similar.

I have one that I never got around to finishing, but the acoustic was more filler than prominent in the mix.
There's plenty of songs that do use acoustic with distorted guitars.

good stuff. i'll be back to this thread for ideas later when i redo the electric. seems like most of the stuff here in the thread is doing two things: hanging on a distorted chord for a measure while the acoustic strums, or the electric playing riffs over the ascoustic. i've used these tactics before: it's really the only way i know to blend these two sounds. the problem with my current song is that it seems to call for the electric to double the acoustic, for thickness. i guess i'll try to play around with electric riffs instead and see how that goes. but i think that may damage the song actually.

forty, no it isn't a stupid idea. I've done it for years as well. And seen many that do.

Tadpui, I still have the original mp3 you linked to years ago. That is in my primary listening list when working here. It honestly is one of my favorite HRC tunes. Not sure how it will be in a redone fashion, but damn don't loose the feel that song had in its original form.

i run my alvarez acoustic guitar through a rat with the filter and distortion turned pretty low, into a tech 21 trademark 30 with a little overdrive and some reverb. it works well for me. when recording i also mic the guitar have a clean channel loudest in the mix, but i love the sound of well blended clean and distorted acoustic guitars. certain pedals and amps seem to feedback less, this is something i have been working on forever. the tech 21 and rat dont seem to feedback at all. unlike electric guitars, i think acoustics sound better distorted through a solid state amp, tubes seem to feedback to matter what. you also loose a lot of low end on the distorted acoustic, so i will eq the clean one a little lower.

and if you want to use a plug to distort an acoustic, amplitube is amazing. and i will warn you, once i started distorting my acoustic i became addicted, now i don't record my guitar or play shows with out it, and i don't appreciate the super polished acoustic tone that i once did.

I tune down down...

Forty a good example of some of that type of stuff is a band called Opeth... Norwegienese metal but they know how to play well and usually have state of the art recordings.

this isn't acoustic but it's clean "shimmery" guitar and distorted guitar. It's kind of a poor example. I had really bad monitors at the time.(well that's my poor excuse). It does sound really muddy but there it is.

Edit: the clean/distortion part happens toward the end of the track.

Check out "Sleeping Giant" by Mastodon, also "Hearts Alive." Those guys do some really cool layering of acoustics and electrics.
