Alesis Multimix problems

Dear HRC community. For some time now I have been expedriencing problems with my Multimix. Firstly, when I use the CD to download the drivers I get the frequent audio droputs during playback. Fiddling with the buffers etc doesn't seem to make any difference. When I download the drivers from alesis.com the recording stops and I get the message "can't start the ASIO driver" or smth. I'm using the Multimix with HP PC notebook (Evo N1020v, 1,6 GHz Intel Celeron, 512 Mb RAM, Windows XP) and Cubase SX. I'm grateful or any advice that would help me solve this. Lots of thanks in advance! Teet

Usually when you get the error 'Can't Start ASIO driver' it means something else is already using it. Make sure you have Windows Sounds turned off, and that the default driver for Windows isn't the ASIO driver. You should have a choice such as WDM (may be called Direct Sound/X, WDM, MultiChannel etc.)you can select as the default driver.

You can make these settings under 'Control Panel->Sounds'

And please don't post the same question twice in different sections. It won't get answered any faster. I answered as well in your other thread from earlier today. But OD makes a very good point about what is probably happening.

And you may be experiencing the drop outs due to the low amount of RAM on the laptop. Cubse SX if I'm not mistaken needs about 1 gig minimum to operate and a good performance point.

noize i have a question, sorry to hijack. but i have always wondered about multiple postings. you know how you might have a similar question like a year after you first asked it? i'm in the habit of just starting a new thread, and i think i do that a lot rather than search out my old one and resume it. is that ok, or if not what is the rationale for not liking that sort of thing?

Thanks for a tip OD! I should try that as soon as I get home.
Regarding putting my question to different sections - as I'm new in the world of such forums I wasn't sure weather I had to choose the "right" section to address the "right" members... I therefore chose the two which I guessed would match my question best. Thanks for the comment!
Cheers

forty, I think after a year most of us might forget if we asked it or not. And some times threads that old get out of sight so to speak.

Although the search function would probably find it. If one were to look I am sure you would find more then 10 threads on certain popular questions or variance's of them.

In the case of that kind of length, nobody is going to stone you for opening a second thread.

well, I think I've tried it all now - changed the firewire cable (thought the old one was a bit dodgy as the computer did somteimes not see the multimix), installed the (old) drivers from a CD and then ran the update from alesis.com etc. the outcome is still the same - as I start Cubase the message "Can't start the asio driver" comes up and locks the rest. Going through control panel-sounds-audio I only find the SoundMax (i.e. windows?) and no chance to choose the firewire mixer as default. At the same time the mixer turns up on the hardware list in my comoputer-properties-hardware. All I find in system32 folder that has something to do with asio is two files: DiceAsio.dll and AlesisFirewireAsio.dll. Am I missing something and what could that be? Thanks a lot in advance!

Have you tried to dis-able the onboard sound card? Some times they can cause a driver conflict with other audio device's.

as I understand the "SoundMAX Digital Audio System" that appears on the hardware list in device manager should be the PC sound card. Is that correct? disabling this does not seem to make any difference. perhaps I've missed some foolish detail like re-starting the computer or smth. after disabling it. Or perhaps I have to uninstall it's drivers to make sure it can't interfere? I will try to install my gear on some other computer to see if the system is ok before I trash my laptop...

Some devices only like the TI firewire chipset. Maybe yours is not the TI.

go to control panel, system, device manager, and click on the firewire or 1394 controller. If it doesn't say anything about being TI, then it probably isn't.

Yes, soundmax will be your onboard sound. In device manager you should be able to right click on the device, and select disable.

You will need to reboot after disabling the onboard sound, i would think. This will remove any of it's stuff from memory, and window's driver list.

thanks for the suggestions! i've now tried to install my multimix + cubase to another computer and everything works just fine there. so i reckon that after the system was re-installed on my computer some components went missing(?). i wonder if this can be the case? is there some secret place in the system that controls audio/asio other than those that can be accessed via control panel or device manager?
thanks again!
