I am currently Midi retarded. I am not sure about external Midi devices or anything, but I am currently looking to get into it.

I have an older keyboard that has midi in and out on the back of it. I bout it at Radio Shack in 1997. I belive it is a optimus (haha) concertmate 990.

I want to be able to hook it up to my PC and use as a midi controller for a soft synth in Sony Acid Pro 6. I was browsing around on Musician's Friend and found this:

Is this a good purchase to hook up a simple midi keyboard and use it as a soft synth controller?

The one you are looking at looks like it would work just fine. You will need a couple of midi cables to go along with it.

I have the M-Audio UNO which appears to accomplish the same thing and it has worked great for me.

I'm not sure if there is any difference between the two so maybe someone else will chime in.

I use the UNO as well does the job well and includes the cable needed. Where the 1X1 would probably be better is if you want to chain multiple midi devices together.

Yep, that is the only difference between the two units. Both will accomplish the same thing. One has the cable attached and the other does not.

I use Acid 4. It should be the same.
In case you haven't figured it out yet...

1. Add Softsynth
2. Add a Miditrack
3. Assign Softsynth to the Miditrack

I know that much of the midi thing. I use Toontrack's EZ Drummer for some projects. The thing I am totaly going to be new to is the hardware midi. Like routing my controller to the right settings in Acid.

May I ask why you stil use Acid 4 instead of bumping up to 6? I love Acid 6. It really is a great program. I'll be getting the complet Acid 6 Pro traning seminar DVD made from Sony themselves to learn all the bells and whistles.

My computers are a little slow. Besides it does everything I want it to do...For now.
I'm sure I'll upgrade to something else in the future...maybe acid 6 or 7???? or maybe something else.
