Which Midi Controller?

Alright,
I need a midi controller(I think). I want something that could be used as a keyboard but for now I want it mainly to use for drums. Something I can use to control Session Drummer in Sonar. Price range anywhere under $150. Closer to $100 would be good though.

Thanks,

I was just going to suggest that one. It is a pretty reliable little controller. I think zZounds has it about 10 or 20 bucks cheaper, not sure though. Use our link above in the menu and check it out.

But ya, I have an older version here that Tuna uses and it works great.

Hey I'm in the same boat here. I'm going to have to settle for fake drums for my current project since getting and micing a real kit just isn't in my budget right now.

I thought I'd use Battery 2 since I recently saw it on sale for $99. But its now discontinued and Battery 3 is all I can find for $199, which is out of my budget.

I can probably swing $200 or less for a controller and some sampling software (I've got the samples covered for now, using NSKitFree).

I want something capable of using multiple layers so I can take advantage of NSKit's multiple sample layers. Then I want to pair it with a velocity-sensitive keyboard.

I see that M-Audio has a 25-key controller for $99, I wonder if its worth anything?

Anybody know of some good drum sequencing program for around $100?

It probably doesn't have all the features of a "real" MIDI controller, but my old Roland D-10 works a treat for me for drums and keys.
Wouldn't any MIDI-ready keyboard work?

That's pretty much what I'm looking for. My only requirements are that it have velocity-sensitive keys and be able to do both keyboard stuff and be able to control a drum sequencer.

One other question: my DAW only has USB 1.0 ports on it. Will a USB MIDI keyboard/interface overpower the 1.0 USB ports? Will I need USB 2.0 instead?

I think most are capable of doing both 1.0 and 2.0 but I would recommend using a power supply for it either way. I don't run anything accept the UX-2 without an external PSU.

And ya, just about any little midi keyboard would work out pretty well. You might find that 25 keys is a bit limiting though for key parts, drums would be just fine though.

And beware that some don't have true velocity sensitive curving on them. It is rather a very short curve and hard to articulate without going back several times.

Cool, thanks for the input Noize.

I don't play piano at all so I may be able to get along with 25 keys since I'd just be hunting and pecking.

Would you think that the little 25-key M-Audio keyboards would have and OK velocity curve on them?

Also, I don't have any special sequencing software that supports multiple layers of samples for the different velocities. Do you think that Cubase SE would do this, or would I need to find something like Battery?

I'm kind of mad about the sudden disappearance of Battery 2 now that Battery 3 is out since there is a $100 price difference between the 2!

Ya, the curve on the M-Audio one is pretty good for most stuff. Drum's would be just fine.

On the sampler, I think KVR has several in the free ones that would do just fine. I can't remember any of the names of them though. But their search engine can refine by almost any parameter you can think of.

And ya, I think there is a small sample player in Cubase SE that would work for that as well. Not sure on that again though.

When I get back on Sunday I will take a look and see if i can dig a free one up.

Hey just in case you care, I ended up going for the E-MU Xboard 49-key MIDI controller. It came with a few goodies as far as synths and sample libraries and it was the only controller in its range that had aftertouch and customizable velocity curves, and the reviews all seemed to favor the feel of the keys. So I went for it. Unfortunately its backordered or else I'd already have it :(

Nicely done. Ya the Proteus sound module software is well worth the price of the unit. As long as they haven't dumbed down the sounds it should be great.

I'll chime in and say the Xboard is a pretty nice keyboard controller for the price. I'm happy with my 61-key. The proteus x sounds are pretty good too. If memory serves, the Xboard 25 and 49 both ship with the proteus x LE version, whereas the 61-key sports the real deal. (Unfortuantely I missed out on the Planet Earth/Phatt/Drums libraries deal, which was around for awhile after I bought it :( )

Anyhoo, I do like the keyaction, not mushy or springy, but...I dunno "solid" feeling, but not full-weighted. It was a huge step up from my 11 year-old Yamaha PSR-520.

The only issue I've had, and I'm positive it was something I did when mucking around in FL Studio (though I don't know WHAT I did!) killed the Proteus X settings, and after uninstalling, I can't re-install, as I get an Error (the infamous EI001 or something like that)

I've gone so far as to remove every mention of EMU/proteus/etc. from the registry itself! Anyways, end of rant.

Really, all in all it's a nice setup :) I just have....issues....with my comp.
