Each instrument has to be listening to it's own MIDI channel. Then none of them will interfere with each other.

Well, not being a MIDI guru I would have to say by sending said SysEx command on the one channel that the instrument is listening on.

OK DB,

Well, my synth for instance, I always have it in "split" mode therefore it responds to 2 midi channels which control each voice. Which midi channel would I assign the program change command then?

Uuuuummmm, to whichever voice you want to change...

So, your synth has two voices it can use at the same time, are they both full keyboard voices, or is it one voice at the top and one voice at the bottom? I have seen cheaper keyboards split it like that at times...

I have to say that I am not a mIDI user and really know mostly it's usage in theory, not practice...

Its a program in the synth...that has 2 "scenes". Each scene is a different sound, and each scene has a diffrent channel. But both scenes are part of the same "program"

Which synth are we talking about here?

There will be a section in the manual that outlines midi implimentation for the keyboard - that'll be the best place to look.

gotta agree with jues here. You need to tell us what synth your using before we can even guess. The big thing is, you are going to have to tell one synth to listen to certain channel's and not the other's. Then tell the other synth to listen to the channel's the other is onto listening to.

bah. Your all so confusing here. hehe.
simplify.
1 MIDI Controller can control 16 different MIDI Devices.
If your using a keyboard(even if it has split setting) It Only uses 1 channel of MIDI
Each Device in your MIDI chain needs to be assigned a different number.
Each of the devices then needs to be set to recieve command via MIDI (slaves)
From this point on it becomes case sensitive so you will have to refer to your owners manuals on what the commands are for each MIDI Device.
Confused yet? ;)

Ok....here are the 3 instruments that are connected to the MC-80..MC-80 OUT1 going to a Yamaha An1x, Novation K-Station, and a Yamaha A4000 sampler...the AN1x has 2 scenes, the kstation can only play one "patch" at a time. The A4000 is 16 part multitambral(spelling). I have a Midi merge box that has all outs of the instruments connected, then connecting to the IN2 of the MC-80 for recording. The IN1 od the MC-80 is connected to a Roland R-8 drum machine for time clock. The a4000 and kstation are no big deal. I have found the basic listining channel for the kstation and the a4000. The AN1x however is split into 2 midi channels and the manual does not say which midi channel, scene, etc is the BASIC midi channel. Real confusing here

Here is the address to the page at Yamaha that will give you the owners manual and data list for the An1x. www.yamaha.com/ycaservice/group008/fgrop008.htm

You need acrobat reader to read them. The manual will help yo take the An1x out of split mode and also help you take it out of dual scene mode. This will solve most of your program change problem's. Then you will need to go into the A4000 and tell it to only listen to the channel's that are not being played by the drum machine and the An1x.

That is kool, then you just need to set each scene to play on a differant channel and they will each respond to a differant patch selection. If it won't do that, then you need to build your patches ahead of time to call up the proper scene when it is sent the message to do so.
