I have a gig tomorrow, very easy it's one piper and play back music with 4 e15's. It's for an AV company so I think what they will send me is a regular shure lav wireless mic. Where is the best place for a mic on bagpipe?

I should of asked for more details, I don't think a bagpipe would need amplification in a medium size room.

BTW how do you guys write micing?? that way it sounds like myssing

micking?? miking??

Never done it and I realise because of that, this info in null but...

actually, is it live? as in lots of noise and stuff to worry about?? It looks like it is but anyways, the guy is going to be moving around a lot and I don't think you could close mic it, so I'm thinking a pair of decent room mics would probably work.

Now then, if it is Angus Young playing...

I guess he will be marching. I know I will have to turn the gain down to 0 on the pack

I've miced plenty of violins and marching drums, but the source is obvious on those instruments but never done a bagpipe before.

Actually after looking at a pic, right near the top of the shoulder should be fine.

Oh boy! Bagpipes! Yeah, I have worked with this situation before. And, it is nuts! To begin with, they are extremely loud on there own. Also, Bagpiper's have no regard for your speaker placement. So, keep one eye on them, the other on your board. Your going to need more than one wireless. Reason being, they have the drones, and the reed portion. To get a good sounding mix, you need to place a mic between two of the drones, and one around the reed portion. The drones are up high. And that's where the fun begins. They usually walk right in front of your speakers, and point the mic directly at the horn. Keep one hand on the mute button. Pray to God that they don't hand you a WL93 element. WL93's are pizoes. And distort vary easy at the high volumes that a Bagpipe plays at. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that they hand you a WL185 instead.

Yes I did. I'm using it mostly as a RTA.

What do you think about putting the lav on the right shoulder???

Well nothing would beat this.

I am doing a corporate gig, I hand out the lav to the first speaker it's around 7:30 am, so I told him when you are at the podium just flick the switch wait a few second and start talking. I am reading my newspaper and having a nice coffee in front of the mixing board (well beside it) the freaking guy was chatting with his co-workers and turned the lav on right in front of the horn. I taught I was gonna puke, I've never heard something like that before.

Don't you just love idiots! And, if you only have one mic. Sure, that will work. You should be able to get an ok mix for the live. And you can fudge with it for the recording.

Oh man, no recording there. it's for an AV company, you know how they like to sale to their clients, I bet you I won't even have to use that lav.

Oh yes, I do. I'll tell you, one of these days I'll tell you story about one of the guys I work with. It's a good one, where he falls asleep with his hands on the master fader during a christian gig.

A friend of mine fell backwards right off the FOH riser right trough the drape line. Right on the other side where they had their displays.

He was standing on the back legs of his chair and fell asleep.

I fell asleep so many times on those gigs.
Mostly medical symposiums all you understand are the basic english words like the,of etc.. the rest is pure gibberish.

That's about right.

So the piper didn't show up for his gig. Apparently he was flying in from Vancouver and actually forgot about the gig.
(would be like Seattle to Detroit for you guys in the states)

So all I had was a wireless mic for speech and 4 speakers and an awesome 4 course meal. Not bad of a day :)
