I'm in the process of putting together a computer for recording purposes. I'm getting a Pentium IIII. I have been looking for a good card and software to use and some people I have talked to have said to get the Pro Tools 001 setup. Have any of you used this and is it a good place to start.

Thanks, Terry

Pro Tools is a very nice package, I was looking at getting the Digi 001 some time ago but as my current machine is incompatible, I am now looking eldewhere.
There are quite a few products and software packages out there which are a little more affordable. You would do well to check a few demos by Cakewalk, Cubase and Cool edit pro (my favourite for some time now) before you make an investment in Pro Tools. You might fall in love with another editor and be stuck with your Digi 001 interface.
Having said that, if you like the Pro tools package and know how to use it then you don't really need much else.

The Pro Tools version that comes with Digi001 and works with any Windows sound card only runs on Windows 95/98 and maybe ME. No NT based OS's like 2000 and XP. And the very high-end Pro Tools only works with proprietary plugins and with digidesign hardware (expensive).

It is a great app, I will say that, but the requirements usually don't meet up well with the home recording type of studio.

dB nailed it on the head. The 001 is a nice rig, but has many limitation's. And to upgrade the Pro-Tools LE package to accomodate a heavier track load is not cheap software wise. You would be mile's ahead looking to M-Audio or Echo for a better choice of audio interface and putting your money into a good program like Sonar of Cubase, or one of the many program's you will see recomended all over this site.

Oh yes, the TDM based effect's are not cheap. And the real Pro-Tool's app is for Mac only, and it is the most expensive set up out there. I would rather invest my money is a setup like Radar or something.

Hey Thanks guys!

I guess I'll stop being lazy and start reading through all the other threads on here and see what looks good. I guess I got interested in Pro-tool because I work at a building that has a working studio and when I asked the engineers there they recomended Digi 001 saying it would be something I could take to any studio and have mastered or mixed and never have to worry about it being compatible.

I'm brad new to this. I have been a singer and musicaian for many years but have only been involved in one recording project and that was 25 years ago. Nobody even thought about digital recording at that time. Everyone still had reel to reel rigs in their stereo systems. ;) The latest and greatest thing at that time was the cassette tape. :)

Thanks again, Terry

Yes, some people are just ignorant about tranporting and saving audio. Program's like Sonar XL can now save/export audio in amost any format you can think of. And if it missed one, there are now conversion program's that will convert it. So don't ever let anyone tell you that Pro-Tools is the industrie standard, because it is no longer true, and really never was. So save your money and look to one of the more user friendly card's.

Actually, I think Cubase and Nuendo are becoming more and more industry standard these days.

They are gaining, but Sonar/CakeWalk product's are still the big seller's to the mass market. I still need to try Nuendo and judge for myself. And I will say, Cubase has left my arsenal. I will probably still use it on occasion, but I will not be upgrading any more.

In the typical consumer/home studio market Cakewalk does probably have a good piece of the action, but if one is considering an app that is "industry standard" that tells me they are thinking of the ability to bring their files into a pro facility for mastering or whatever.

There is no way you I will believe that Cakewalk/Sonar out-numbers Cubase/Nuendo in the high-end professional facilities. There is just no way I will believe that.

my friend has the protools digi001 setup and I really prefer my SONAR 2.0 XL because of the unlimited tracks and more plugins and I think it's easier to use. The digi001 is the sound card right? been a while sence I saw my friend. . . but my friend went on and on about how it had the 8 XLR and 1/4 inputs. . . well my aardvark q10 is pretty much the same with less noise and 2 hi-z inputs. . and phantom power. Also. . it maybe how he had it set up but it had an 9ms latency where the aardvark is realtime. but I think protools looks more like a sound board and that may be easier for some people.

In all the article's I have read in the past few month's. I still have not seen anyone refer to using Cubase, or Stienberg product's at all, for their portable or home based studio software. The ultra high priced E-Magic crap show's up more often then Stienberg. But I have noticed that several of the people scoring movie's are refering to Sonar and also to Nuendo on occasion.

I was very surprised to see it myself, but they cannot print it if it ain't true. They state the ability to cross format's when importing and exporting, and the use of some of the DXi synth's and tool's as a big plus. They can use it anywhere in the field or the big studio, and the user interface was also the big seller.

Anyway, I still say, stay away from the Digi 001.
