Mackie 1604 vlz pro problems

I'm a new member here, so hello to everybody. I really am in need of some help. I bought a 1604 vlz pro from a guy off of ebay. He sounded like a really nice guy and I even met him personally. In his description of the Mackie, he said that it was in perfect condition. When I got it home and started playing with it, it sounded great- that's not the problem. As I kept using it, I noticed that every once and a while either the left or right signal drops and sounds like a lo fi effect or something. Could this be a short in my Elco cable or something? Have I been "had"? I really need some help. I'm not very experienced. Thank you for your time.

Welcome Christian!

Sorry you are having proglems with the new mixer. That is a tough one. For one I am not familiar with an "elco" cable. That's a disadvantage for me obvoiusly. It is odd that it drops sound in either left or right speratically. A power supply would drop both sides, a dirty pot or slider would drop only one side. A bad TR, TRS, or XLR cable would also effect only one side. Most mixers are designed with a very seperate path for left and right channels. The next time you have a drop out. While the drop is occuring try turning your panning knobs and see if one panning knob causes the sound to "pop" back into place or if any of them cause a "scratching" noise while being turned. It may be as simple as using electrical cleaner on a panning knob. Other similar tests are wiggling cables etc. to see if any aberent results can be noted.

Wish I could help more. That's an odd one! Good news is there are those here with much more experience than mine so hang out.

Some rubbing alcohol, a cotton swab and cleaning out the jacks might help too...it sounds like it is a more serious problem than that, but Ihave had rubbing alcohol fix some unusual problems every now and then, dust, cigarette ash and other foreign material in your jacks can make bad connections and funny sounds sometimes.

Welcome to the community, glad to have ya!

When the levels drop on the right, I pan to the left and I get normal signal. I'm not sure, but the problem could just be on the right. It's hard to figure out because it only happens once and a while. I would be completely satisfied with a problem that just required some alcohol and a couple cotton swabs. Thank you so much for replying to my question. I think I'm really going to enjoy being part of this community. Thanks again.
