I posted a song in my profile thats just me trying to play some blues licks while I work on a tone. The tone is close to what I'm lookin' for but is missing something, an overtone or something and I don't know what else to try to get it closer, so if anybody has any ideas that would improve it I'd love to hear them.
The licks aren't great I just learned the blues scale so I'm still messing up and I need to work on the speed as well and throw some quick runs in there. <G>

Jan 02, 2008 08:36 am Hey Dog,
I think that the tone is great! Is that the old SG through your Cube 30? It sounds good to me. The backup sounds great too. Is that you or are you fooling us with loops again?

Jan 02, 2008 04:13 pm Nice one OD. Love that sound. I think I know what you mean on the "missing" front... It's the end of the phrases that don't have that tube thang... I'd suggest a reverd or delay on there to give you that. Dunno... Guitar Wold does a cool thing where they show you to settings for a bunch of pedals for their tabs. Maybe there's a forum for your GT6 that might have settings. Anything Clapton would definitely work...
The sound is very cool. Reminds me of Cream era Clapton (the ES-335 days).
Great playing too, Dan.

Jan 02, 2008 04:27 pm I don't know that much about recording guitar, but compared to what I think of when I think of blues guitar, I feel like there might be a bit too much delay(?) and theres something with the distortion (maybe too compressed?). Are you playing this through an amp? If I were to guess, I would say it sounds like a modeler. I know I'm prolly not much help, but just throwing out my 2 cents.
The playing is cool though!

Jan 02, 2008 07:04 pm OD, I'm curious as well what you were playing, assume the SG. But what was the signal chain? GT6 through the Cube? Just the GT6 or just the Cube? If it is just the GT6 then I would loose any delay you have on and use straight reverb instead. Maybe add the tiniest bit of low mid, and I do mean tiny. And compress the crap out of it. That should help it pump a little more. It sounds like the humbuckers are pushing a little bit though so I am curious what you are playing through. It has a pretty good sound as is, but what we are hearing verse what you are hearing live are 2 different things.
Its got a very good bite to it that is for sure. I guess if your looking for that pumping, push pull sound compression might help it a great deal.

Jan 02, 2008 08:50 pm My signal path was Variax->Mixer->Guitar Rig 2. I don't have any delay on it just Spring Verb, maybe I'll play around with different reverbs or maybe just cut back on it a bit?. The whole patch is pretty minimal. I will try putting a slight boost on the lower mid as well. Compression compleley slipped my mind to try, that's a good one I'll have to experiment with. I'm trying to keep the bite in it, but still get it somewhat warm without losing the attack, which is what I've been fighting alot.
I'm not real happy with the distortion as well because it breaks up a bit to much on multiple string parts, but part of that is my sloppy playing, if I'm real careful I can keep it pretty clean.
Jim, the backing I just played 12 bars of bass and looped it, the rythm guitars are the variax and the drums were a Raggae pattern included in Session Drummer 2 (Sonar) they really don't give ya much to start with in the way of drum patterns/samples. LOL
TC, while I was working on this the Clapton thing occured to me as well so I started playing a bit of Crossroads and it was indeed close to that sound.
Thanks for the suggestions all, I do appreciate it, soon as I get this sorted out I am working on an actual blues song that I want to get started on.

Jan 03, 2008 09:56 pm I'm thinking stick with the spring reverb but maybe cut it back a bit. If it has its own high cut filter or Eq try tweaking a tiny bit of high end off the verb as well.

Jan 04, 2008 01:24 am I'll try tweaking high cut on the reverb. The variax is pretty cool, overall I'm pretty happy with it though considering the price I think they could improve the quality a bit. Guitar Rig, I'm still figuring it out, but I think it will do pretty well once I figure out what works & what doesn't. :)
