Anyone ever use Audacity?

I am taking German and our teacher had us download Audacity. We have to record ourselves speaking German on it. It actually works pretty good for what I am using it for. I haven't tried recording music on it yet.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with it.

Yeah, I've used Audacity quite a bit, actually at the NYE party last night I was talking about audio and video capture with a couple guys (geeks will be geeks) and one of them was a big Audacity user as well...

So it's not just for Online Classes? Cool!

hehehe, no, actually it's an incredibly powerful editor for the price (ummmm, nothing!) The effects are decent, and if I recall the noise reductions plugs are pretty fair too...it's got optional LAME mp3 exporting, supports VST plugs (if memory serves)...

Very cool little app, I don't much like the interface, the wave file windows piling up and whatnot, but it is a great tool.

It's no WaveLab, but it's cool.

I have used it for years, just recently getting a USB mixer interface and recording my music on it exclusively (in my profile is the last song I did a few motns ago, Tomorrow's Going To Be Another Day).

It is a great audio editor considering that it is totally free and open to all manner of other plugins.

It may not be a $500 chunk of software but if you don't need a whole recording studio on your computer this program works very well.

How do you cut part of a track without the rest of it moving to the left? Every time I try to cut or delete something the whole track moves over.

Not sure on that one. Although I am guessing it should be a setting in maybe the snap menu or something.

I know in Sonar you can set up the editing bits to do what ever you want. But I've never had that kind of thing happen.

One of the other guys using Audactiy may be better suited to answer that one.

There is probably an easy answer for this, but usually when I cut something I want it to move over and sync up...but you can cut/copy what you want to save, insert a 'new audio track', paste it to that track (either temporarily to store it or just leave it there for now) and then go to your original track and delete the part you didn't want.

Then you can either replace the deleted section with the copy/paste from the extra audio track, record a new part to insert where the deletion was, or even use the time shift tool (the fifth in the row(s) of six buttons on the tool menu) and slide that cut/copied piece you wanted to keep over (on that second audio track) to where you wanted it to be in the song.

I realize the way I explained this is all pretty confusing, when in practice it is pretty easy.

Try a few of these links on this page

audacity.sourceforge.net/help/documentation

(either the manual documentation or the forum links) for perhaps an easier/better answer than above.

When I recorded the vocal track I would make some noise when I was waiting to sing the next verse or chorus. I want to cut out the track entirely in when I am not singing, but obviously I don't want the parts where I am singing to move.

I didn't explain what I was doin to well before, hopefully this describes my problem better.

Ah yes, what you want to do is NOT to cut the track, but to AMPLIFY it *down* to the lowest possible degree.

Select (highlight) the spaces where you want no noise between the vocals, go to Effects>Amplify> and then slide the slider all the way to the left (negative db numbers). Hit OK, then open the Effects menu box again and hit 'Repeat Amplify' (at the top of the menu box). That will ensure no artifacts sqeak through.

And that's it! :)

Has anyone ever used Audacity to master music?

I have used Audacity for file conversions and some routine tasks it's a little limited but for a free editor cannot be faulted really.

Never used it for mastering though, too mnay other excellent software developers that make better software for this job, Nuendo and SADiE being 2 of them.

I just hear different users saying that they would rather use Audacity over Wavelab. I have both except my Wavelab is wavelab lite. I'm just trying to mess with the concept of mastering. It's a lot more complicated than mixing! I'd rather mix than master.

I played with it..The nice thing is, no matter how poor you are, if you can get a pc, even a really old one, you have a studio!
