I am creating a home studio and need some advise on what monitors to go for. I will be using headphones most of the time which I already own, but for mixing I was told I need monitors. I don't want to spend too much if possible. One reccomendation was the KRK RP5's. Anyone here use these before? Any reccomendations in a similar price range (300-400 for the pair)?
Thanks

Dec 10, 2007 02:50 pm You don't need monitors, but they help...that said, I have heard many good mixes done over headphones.
I use some small, inexpensive Samson Resolv's that are pretty nice for their price www.zzounds.com...m--SAMRESOLV50A

Dec 10, 2007 03:16 pm The KRK's are good, but I think they're a bit overrated. Personally, I think they're a bit too colored in through the lows.
Those Samsons look sweet though, and the fact that they're bi-amped kinda sells me on 'em. Funny, I figured you had an over the top, extravagant setup dB. I took ya for an Event kinda guy.
Dec 10, 2007 03:19 pm I used to, I have come full circle in the last few years, and last year offed a TON of my gear realizing it was stupidly underused and underneeded.
Over the last years I record less, work more and actually realized my music is relatively simple and unsophisticated, easily done with a Toneport, a couple guitars and a bunch of software.
I have gone from "have it in case I need it" to "find another way to do it with what I have".
I now have more money in my pocket (well, my wife's pocket), more room in my basement and more beer in my fridge.

Dec 10, 2007 03:27 pm The end justifies the means I suppose. Sucks the wife takes all the money though, lol.
Dec 10, 2007 03:29 pm To me it just seemed silly having all that gear sitting there that I used increasingly less. Honestly, I'd rather have my wife have the money, she's much smarter with it than I am. :-) If I carried the money, we'd have none. I make it better than her, she manages it better than me.
On the flip side I "made" thousands of dollars selling all that gear.

Dec 10, 2007 03:57 pm I use the M-Audio BX5A. Around $300 and are very nice for what I do. No sub out on them though if you plan on upgrading later.

Dec 11, 2007 05:19 pm I bought Tuna a pair of the BX5a's as well and he really like them. So do I really.
For my personal gear I use a pair of older KRK's with 8" drivers. Their big and heavy and not very portable, which is OK as they have rarely left this room. And they require a rather large power amp as they really suck the juice.
I have carted the M-Audio's out a couple of times and they worked well for me, even though I wasn't used to them at all. Pretty straight forward sound. For the price the Samson Resolves that dB has are pretty good and very comparable to the M-Audio units.
