ADATS aren't needed these days, and are generally a bit outdated.

As far as what they do, they just record the audio. There are different means to do that, from tape to computer, adat is just one means.

yeah ADAT recorders, (NOT the optical cable itself) ....are digital recorders that record digital audio to (what looks just like) a VHS style cassette tape....there is an "HD" (hard disk) version out there now as well that doesn't need the tapes.

if you plan on recording to a computer then an adat recorder is out of the question...as i don't think a you can say record to adat, then mix on a computer using software....you need a standalone mixer....and honestly, i don't see a need for them, unless you hate computers.

that said, i've worked in a studio that had 3 adat machines (24 tracks total) and we did use them several times a year....not to record to, but to pull tracks (that were already recorded from other clients) off and convert them over to data CD for mixing elsewhere....so format compatibility/conversion is a good benefit/service to offer.

and no, you don't need ADAT anything to be "pro"....what you DO need is extensive knowledge/experiance on audio technique, and the gear you already have, and a good client base to run a 'pro' studio.

you're going to need good monitors and a good recording aplication as well, but otherwise yes, you should be set....

i bet it's more of the people working the gear than than the other way around....i guess what i'm trying to say is buying all the 'best' gear isn't going to give you the 'best' sound....i've been to a number of "pro" studios here in Nashville and have seen some really crappy technique get by, which can lead to a not so good reputation when you hand the client the final product....which WILL kill your business quicker than any other single factor.

it's all about the ear, not the gear.

ok....first off, lets put the outboard pre's on hold for now since we can use the pre's on the mixer or interface.....

how many individual tracks (channels) do you want to be able to record at the same time....do you plan on recording acoustic drums?

that will steer us twards an interface....are you on a mac or pc?

ok, so you're going to need an interface that can handle 12+ inputs simultaneously.

most firewire type interfaces max out at around 10 analog inputs (we're not talking digital here)....so there's a couple of ways we can approach this....you can get two identical fireware interfaces (like the presonus and what not)

or you can get a good pci card that can handle mutiple ADAT inputs....ADAT (optical) can have up to 8 channels of digital audio on one optical cable) so a card with two ADAT inputs can handle 16 channels of audio (RME makes some really good ones like the hammerfall)

there is no right or wrong way to go here, money usually dictates this choice, the firewire interfaces will be less expensive in the long run.

I am personally going to link two Motu 8pre's when I can afford it. 16 channels of pre-amp goodness. I have a nice computer but it would choke once I start mixing 20+ tracks at 192.
